Emotional Grammy Tribute: Quincy Jones, Toby Keith & More Honored in Moving Memorial

The 2025 Grammys is making sure artists’ legacies live on.

During the February 2nd event at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com arena, the Recording Academy paid tribute to musicians who had sadly passed away within the previous year. This group included Quincy Jones, Liam Payne, Toby Keith, Rich Homie Quan, and Cissy Houston.

In a heartfelt display, Chris Martin performed a moving piano version of Coldplay’s hit song “All My Love” as images of artists who had passed away were shown on the screen behind him.

Back in 2024, when I lost my beloved hero Quincy at the grand old age of 91, the tribute paid to him during the “In Memoriam” segment was nothing short of extraordinary. Several talented artists took the stage to perform songs that he had either produced or penned himself, a fitting homage to this music icon whose work continues to inspire me daily.

At some point during the emotional homage presented by Will Smith, Cynthia Erivo, adorned in a flowing black dress, performed a version of “Fly Me to the Moon.” This performance received appreciation from Queen Latifah, Beyoncé, and Jay-Z who were among the spectators.

First, the country sensation Lainey Wilson took over the stage for an energetic performance of “Let The Good Times Roll.” Later on, the legendary Stevie Wonder graced the stage with a touching rendition of “We Are the World.

Quincy often lent a hand, as was the case when I created the following anthem penned by both Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, according to him. He noted that this track provided sustenance for countless individuals in Ethiopia.

“We are still the world,” he added, “and I say to you, we are still the children.”

Janelle Monáe, wearing a suit, loafers, and an “I heart QJ” t-shirt, electrified the end of the segment with a vibrant rendition of “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.

Apart from the renowned musicians, several others also received recognition at the event that Trevor Noah hosted for a fifth straight year.

The occasion honored the essence of Los Angeles and paid tribute to the courage of its emergency responders amidst the devastating wildfires that recently swept through the city, charring more than 40,000 acres, claiming 29 lives, and leaving countless homes in ruins, among them those belonging to celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, Spencer Pratt, and Heidi Montag.

Apart from honoring them during the ceremony, the Recording Academy also committed and collected over $4 million as emergency relief funds for music industry professionals struggling due to the natural catastrophe.

Furthermore, numerous artists like Jennifer Lopez, Diane Warren, and Taylor Swift have also voiced their concerns over the destruction wreaked by the fires.

In her Instagram post on January 16th, Taylor expressed that while many individuals face difficult times, numerous supportive organizations are joining forces to aid these communities in recovery. She then suggested, for those who wish to contribute or find it feasible, to make a donation.
