Enhanced Versions of Original Doom Games Get a Surprise Release

As a seasoned gamer who’s been through the digital trenches since the era of dial-up modems, I can confidently say that the return of DOOM is a triumphant and nostalgia-inducing event. The announcement of DOOM: The Dark Ages has me eagerly awaiting next year, but in the meantime, the Enhanced Edition of DOOM and DOOM 2 has kept my gaming heart racing.

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the announcement of “Doom: The Dark Ages” has me buzzing with excitement! Ever since I first picked up the original Doom back in 1995, I’ve been hooked on this iconic franchise. To finally get a prequel to the masterpiece that was Doom 2016, showing us how the Doom Slayer became the legend we know and love, is simply mind-blowing!

The Enhanced Edition of Doom + Doom 2 offers a variety of improvements, such as multiplayer and cooperative gameplay for up to 16 players across different platforms online. This allows players in 2024 to experience the classic multiplayer aspect of Doom. The update is a significant win for the gaming community, revitalizing the shooter genre. In addition, it includes an improved soundtrack and allows users to switch between modern and original soundtracks. Both games run smoothly at 60 FPS in 1080p on all platforms and can reach up to 120 FPs in 4K on compatible hardware, making gameplay almost worth the purchase price alone.

Enthusiasts will appreciate the convenience of being able to browse community-created mods directly within the game itself, enhancing the overall smoothness of the experience. By the way, the development team has gone above and beyond with their offerings for mission packs. They’ve not only included the original two Doom games, but also a substantial collection of content. In total, you’ll find 187 mission maps and 43 deathmatch maps within this package. Here is the comprehensive list of games, Megawads, and map packs that come with the complete offering: [List]

  • Doom 1
  • Doom 2
  • TNT: Evilution
  • The Plutonia Experiment
  • Master Levels for Doom 2
  • No Rest for the Living
  • Sigil
  • Legacy of Rust (a new episode created in collaboration by id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames)
  • A new deathmatch map pack featuring 26 maps

Apart from the new content and regular updates, players can expect additional features such as a rotating weapon selection for quicker weapon swapping and local split-screen modes for deathmatch and cooperative play with up to four participants. It’s evident that id Software is going all out for this launch, which is exciting news for long-time enthusiasts.

As a die-hard gamer, I’m pumped to announce that the classic duo of Doom + Doom 2 is now playable on PlayStation, Switch, Xbox, and my trusty old PC! On the flip side, while we don’t have an exact date yet, Doom: The Dark Ages is set to invade the next-gen battlegrounds of PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC in 2025. Can’t wait!
