In his recently published memoir titled “Runaway Train: A Tale of My Life’s Journey Thus Far“, the 68-year-old individual delves into the significant ups and downs of his life and professional journey, sharing insights about how these experiences have influenced his relationships with his renowned sister Julia Roberts and his daughter Emma Roberts.
In 2018, Eric made headlines by telling Vanity Fair, “Without me, there wouldn’t be Julia Roberts or Emma Roberts as celebrities/actresses, and I’m proud of that.” Now, after dealing with a cocaine addiction, Eric is retracting his remarks.
He pens in the book, according to People, ‘I sincerely hope that Julia will find it in her heart to accept my public apology.’ He acknowledges, ‘What I said was incredibly foolish.’
He added that his drug addiction struggles directly affected his relationship with Julia and their other sister Lisa Roberts Gillan.
He expresses that it’s not unreasonable to assume they might have developed PTSD due to the past instances when they felt threatened by him. He explains that Lisa and Julia required affection and safety, but what they encountered was apprehension and instability instead.
Beyond the tension with my kin, what truly gnaws at me is the heartache of losing Emma due to my battle with addiction. She was more than just a companion; she was my light in the darkest times.
The actress from “Scream Queens” is the child of Eric and his former partner, Kelly Cunningham. They split up when she was an infant. Later, Julia stood by Kelly during her custody dispute with Eric for their daughter Emma. As reported by People magazine, the actor doesn’t delve into the specifics of the situation in his book, but expresses that Julia made the appropriate choice.
The Dancing With the Stars competitor pens: “I envision myself being Julia’s brother and Emma Roberts’ father for my lifetime.” He wishes to fulfill this role, to step back with dignity and poise when the time comes. This desire is one of the reasons he chose to write the book.
Though Emma hasn’t discussed her relationship with her father extensively, at age 33 she has managed to make him feel proud.
Eric expressed his admiration for his daughter’s work during an interview on Still Here Hollywood in July 2024, stating, “These days, I’m absolutely smitten with what she’s creating. I find it hard to believe how talented she has become. I’m bursting with pride for her; it’s almost blinding.
