Erik Menendez & Lyle Menendez Tell Their Story in Netflix Doc Trailer

As a dedicated follower of true crime narratives and courtroom dramas, I have always been intrigued by the Menendez brothers’ story – a tale that has captivated audiences for decades. The upcoming documentary “The Menendez Brothers” promises to shed new light on this infamous case, allowing Erik and Lyle to share their side of the story in their own words.

Erik Menendez and Lyle Menendez are speaking out.

In Ryan Murphy’s recent Netflix series, the events surrounding the 1989 murders of José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez, which led to the conviction of their sons, serve as a source of inspiration. However, in the documentary titled “The Menendez Brothers,” the duo themselves are telling their story through their own perspectives.

Speaking over the phone from prison, Lyle stated in the September 23rd documentary trailer, “People often wonder why we took our parents’ lives. Perhaps now, viewers will grasp the reality behind our actions.

Reflecting on the 1993 trial, he ponders over how media portrayal influenced public perception about him and his lifestyle.

Lyle noted that there was a lot of public attention from the start, which meant “we didn’t get to tell our own story.” (This version maintains the original meaning but is more conversational and easier to understand.)

According to Erik, “On the outside, we seemed like a flawless family, but hidden within our home, things were terribly amiss.

At the court hearing, Erik, who was 22 at the time, and Lyle, aged 25, claimed that their parents had subjected them to years of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. They asserted that the murders were committed in self-defense. However, Prosecutor Pamela Bozanich countered this by stating that the brothers committed the murders out of greed, a claim she reiterates in the Netflix documentary. Following an initial trial that ended inconclusively, a second trial led to both siblings being convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole in 1996.

The October 7th documentary delves into the role of social media in examining true crime, specifically on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, and how it has significantly changed public perception of certain cases. Erik expressed his viewpoint, saying “These two kids didn’t commit this crime for financial gain,” implying that he feels unfairly punished with a potential lifetime sentence.

The documentary’s trailer emerged a few days following Tammi Menendez, Erik’s wife, expressing her husband’s response to the anthology series (available on Netflix) on X (previously known as Twitter) on September 19th. In her post, she described the series as an “unfair depiction” of the crime.

In his post, Erik expressed that he felt we had progressed beyond the deceitful representations and destructive characterizations of Lyle, crafting a distorted image based on untruths prevalent in the series. He suggests that these portrayals were intentional. With a sense of sadness, Erik asserts that Ryan Murphy cannot be so uninformed and inaccurate about our reality to present this without malicious intent.

The Menendez Brothers hits Netflix Oct. 7.
