During the challenging phase of a ten-year battle with infertility, it is fair to assume that Erin Andrews wasn’t particularly fond of the numerous medical visits she had to attend.
But the legendary sportscaster did come up with a delicious post-game strategy that helped ease a sliver of her and husband Jarret Stoll‘s frustrations.
“My fertility clinic was right by McDonald’s, and we were always getting bad news and my appointments were always so early in the morning so I could deal with my work,” Andrews detailed in an exclusive interview with TopMob News. “So, it was like, ‘A sausage biscuit with two hash browns, thank you very much.’ And I would eat and cry in my car and call my husband: ‘It didn’t work again, but this sausage biscuit is so good.'”
It’s a successful play she’d recommend to anyone dreading their next appointment.
“Go to the doctor, cross that off your checklist,” she suggested. “I know it sucks, but think about the great fast food meal you’re going to have, which is probably totally counterproductive with going to the doctor, but that’s the way I got through crappy fertility visits and cancer visits. I went straight to the drive-thru and I’m like, ‘I’ll have a large, thank you.'”
And now she’s ready to coach others through the process.
Nearly a decade after the 46-year-old discovered she had cervical cancer following a routine OB-GYN visit, “What I found out after that whole journey was it was a darn good thing that I went to go get checked, because it was treatable,” Andrews said of undergoing multiple surgeries before she was declared cancer-free. “We had caught it early enough.”
And so she’s eager for others to follow her game plan, teaming with AstraZeneca and Hockey Fights Cancer for a national public health campaign that stresses the importance of getting body checked against cancer.
“There’s a lot of reasons why people try to stay away from this,” acknowledged Andrews, who’s releasing a limited edition screen-themed t-shirt through her WEAR By Erin Andrews brand. “They don’t have time, they forget, or they just are so anxious they don’t want bad news. And I get all that.”
Despite consistently scheduling biannual mammograms and other cancer screenings, she often postpones her yearly full-body scans at the dermatologist. “You really should go,” Andrews urged, “so you can walk away feeling reassured and thinking, ‘Why on earth did I wait so long?’
While the Fox Sports NFL reporter spoke about her cancer battle shortly after the 2016 diagnosis, she was initially hesitant to share the Xs and Os of her fertility battle.
Andrews shared that many people in his circle were aware of the difficulties he was facing, and they likely guessed his age and the fact that he didn’t have a child. However, it wasn’t until he found himself in the eighth waiting room, feeling incredibly sick of the situation, that he decided to break his silence. He felt, ‘These waiting rooms are always crowded. Why am I still hiding and being so reserved about this?’
Though former NHL center Stoll, 42, was hesitant to pass around the details of their journey, which led to the June 2023 arrival of son Mack with the help of a surrogate, “When we did,” shared Andrews, “the text messages and the support we got of people being like, ‘We get it,’ were really awesome.”
If answering some questions about her surrogacy experience is part of her day’s activities while skiing, then so be it.
“I was getting fitted for ski boots two weeks ago, and this woman was like, ‘Oh, my god, your whole surrogacy journey,'” Andrews recounted of one recent interaction. “And I said, ‘Yeah, listen, it’s not the way you want to go, but it was the most amazing experience of our life, and we’re so grateful. And, here’s the number to the group we were a part of.’ You want to spread the good news and what helped us out, because you understand that it’s a crappy place to be, and it feels so lonely.”
These days, though, it feels very much like she’s winning.
Andrews admitted that there’s been a great deal of trauma due to our losses, but we are well aware that the final outcome will be enjoyable.
Dressed in a sweat suit and a backwards hat for a recent Target outing, “He’s a minature Larry David,” Andrews cracked of Mack. The toddler’s lists of interests include books and stickers and “as much as his father tries to put a hockey stick in his hand, he’s at the age where we are throwing balls and sounding like Rob Gronkowski.”
