It’s been announced that Jill Valentine may not play a significant part in Resident Evil 9, disappointing fans who anticipated her as a leading character. Given that it’s been almost two decades since Jill was the primary character in a Resident Evil game (excluding remakes), and her role in Resident Evil 5 was more of a side character with some antagonistic elements, it’s not too surprising. I, for one, have given up on expecting the comeback that Jill deserves based on her past roles.
It seems that Resident Evil 9 might be featuring Leon as the lead character, which is fine by me, but I find myself yearning for more representation of other cast members given how frequently Leon and Chris are utilized compared to others in the Resident Evil universe. While Chris has a more prominent role, both characters seem to be Capcom’s preferred choices when introducing an old character into a new game.
Jill Valentine Will Never Be a Main Character Again
As a dedicated fan of Resident Evil, I’ve got to express my thoughts: It appears Capcom might not be planning to make Jill Valentine the lead character in a new Resident Evil game, at least not without starting the series anew. It’s unfortunate because this seems to be a pattern for the female characters of the franchise; you don’t see Rebecca or Claire getting much playtime either, although Claire did grab some attention with Resident Evil Revelations 2. It seems that developers struggle to find the right setting for these characters to return.
Regarding Jill, let me summarize her previous appearance in the story. After the occurrences depicted in Resident Evil Revelations and before Resident Evil 5, Jill and Chris embark on a joint mission that leads them back to Spencer Mansion. There, they cross paths with Albert Wesker, who deceived them in the original Resident Evil. Despite their attempt to confront him, Wesker proves too powerful for both of them. In a desperate struggle, when Wesker seizes Chris, Jill intervenes by tackling Wesker, causing them both to fall through the window and plummet off a cliff. Subsequently, no trace of Jill’s body is found, leading many to believe she perished in that incident.
Indeed, it’s not a truthful depiction of her being deceased. Instead, Wesker employs Jill as a test subject for Uroboros. Yet, she thwarts his plans since the earlier T-Virus infection renders her immune to that particular Uroboros strain. This immunity was exploited by Wesker to enhance Uroboros into the strain that Chris and Sheva encounter. Eventually, Chris and Sheva rescue Jill from Wesker’s grasp, marking the end of her narrative in the Resident Evil games. From then on, she is neither present nor referred to in subsequent games within the series.
It seems logical for Jill to take on a more administrative position in the bioterrorism battle, given her harrowing past under Wesker’s control. I personally would welcome this development. However, I find it unfortunate that the series appears to have sidelined her significantly, which is rather disappointing.
Resident Evil Could Use a Reboot
Considering how much time has passed since Resident Evil’s inception, it might be advantageous to give the franchise a fresh start through a reboot. This would allow for innovative reinventions of the games and an opportunity to alter character storylines that have become challenging to continue due to their current state. Moreover, a reboot could enable the series to maintain its success with intimate narratives, as demonstrated by Resident Evil 7 and Village, following the more action-packed and expansive RE5 and RE6. In essence, I believe there are numerous potential advantages that could arise from such a reboot.
I’m not absolutely sure about Jill Valentine’s future in the Resident Evil series, but history suggests she may not have a significant role anymore. Since my favorite character, Jill Valentine, hasn’t had a prominent position since RE5, it’s become disheartening and I find it hard to maintain hope for her return as a main character. The repeated disappointments have made it seem unlikely that she will reappear in a major capacity.
