Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Handmaid’s Tale season 6, episode 9!
In the penultimate episode of The Handmaid’s Tale’s sixth season on Hulu, the plot thickened with a climactic finale that left fans on the edge of their seats. With just one more episode left before the series concludes, let’s rewind and unpack the events leading up to the dramatic ending.
In season 6, episode 9 of “The Handmaid’s Tale”, the story unfolds following June’s assault on Serena Joy and Commander Wharton’s wedding ceremony. As the Handmaids rebelled by killing the Commanders, they employed bombings as a diversion to reach Gilead’s border. Regrettably, they were caught by Gileadean soldiers. Consequently, Mayday needs to devise a strategy to save June, Aunt Phoebe, and the Handmaids from impending executions, all while persisting with their mission to eliminate the remaining Commanders and demolish Gilead.
Do Nick, Lawrence & Wharton All Die In The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6, Episode 9?
There Is Almost No Way They Survived
In the ninth episode of season 6 in The Handmaid’s Tale, it appears that characters such as Nick, Commander Lawrence, Commander Wharton, and several other Commanders meet their end. In this particular episode, Mayday and the US government enlist Commander Lawrence to carry a bomb aboard a plane. This aircraft is destined to transport Commander Wharton and other top officials to Washington D.C., where they will strategize Gilead’s response. As the plane prepares for takeoff, Nick unexpectedly joins them, effectively sealing his own fate as the plane departs into the night sky.
June observes the plane transform into a fiery explosion, with charred debris cascading towards her. From afar, it’s evident that the bodies of Nick, Lawrence, and Wharton are not visible within the wreckage. Although it’s usually advised to doubt a character’s demise unless a body is found, given the magnitude of this explosion, it’s almost impossible that they survived. Even if they miraculously endured the initial blast, which seems unlikely, they would have been fatally injured by the subsequent fall. Unless some extraordinary event took place, everyone on board the plane has likely perished.
Why Lawrence Had To Sacrifice His Own Life
It Was The Only Way For The Plan To Work
Regrettably, Commander Lawrence found himself in a position where he had to give up his own life to thwart the Commanders’ advance. Originally, the plan was for Lawrence to place the bomb on the plane and depart. However, as he reached the hangar, the other Commanders were already there, having arrived early due to their eagerness to travel to D.C. They questioned Lawrence about his presence, placing him in a challenging predicament. Consequently, he chose to board the plane with the bomb, ultimately sacrificing himself.
either board the plane with the bomb, sacrificing his life, or refuse to get on the plane and forgo the opportunity to assassinate the Commanders. Knowing that the other Commanders desire him on the Wall, Lawrence may have accepted his fate as inevitable. Consequently, he opted to meet a hero’s end.
Why Nick Had To Die & June Couldn’t Save Him
The Plan Would Have Failed If He Knew
In June’s tearful vigil, she saw Nick board the plane, a grim premonition gnawing at her heart. Hidden behind a car, she wrestled with her conscience, torn between actions. But it was too late for him. Following Nick’s treacherous act in season 6, episode 6 of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” trust had become an elusive commodity. It was plausible that he would have swiftly revealed the bomb to the Commanders if she had alerted him, given his seeming disregard for their survival.
Regardless of whether she intended to inform Nick about the bomb, the operation wouldn’t have succeeded. If Nick refused to board the plane because of his awareness of the bomb, it would raise questions among the Commanders about his whereabouts since they were expecting him. Commander Wharton’s presence suggests that it would be unusual for them to depart without Nick. It’s likely that Nick wouldn’t have embarked on a journey knowing it would lead to his demise, leaving no viable alternative. Even if Nick didn’t board the plane and the plane somehow took off without him, Nick’s chauffeur would be aware of his complicity in the Commanders’ deaths.
Why Serena Gave Up Wharton & The Other Commanders
She Finally Saw Wharton For Who He Is
In essence, it was Serena Joy who revealed the plot to assassinate the Commanders by informing the United States about their intended journey to Washington D.C. This act can be seen as her giving up her own husband. Though surprising, June successfully persuaded her by emphasizing Commander Wharton’s unsuitable character, arguing that he was unfit to raise her son. June helped Serena come to terms with this reality, making her understand that Wharton was not a man who should be in charge. Furthermore, Serena began to comprehend that any reform within Gilead would be impossible without sacrificing Wharton and thus, bringing about the necessary change.
What The Deaths Mean For The Handmaid’s Tale
How Will Gilead Respond?
As a devoted film enthusiast, I can’t help but ponder the profound implications these deaths will have on “The Handmaid’s Tale”. These events are certain to leave scars on both the United States and Gilead. On one side, some of Gilead’s most formidable Commanders have met their end, a severe blow to the nation. However, it’s crucial to remember that they still have numerous Commanders remaining. This power void is likely to be filled by the surviving high-ranking figures in Gilead. Unfortunately, with the loss of Lawrence, the United States stands to lose one of its most significant informants.
Intriguingly, Nick’s demise also signifies the conclusion of “The Handmaid’s Tale”‘s epic love triangle, strengthening June and Luke’s bond.
What Will Happen In The Handmaid’s Tale’s Series Finale?
& How Will It Affect The Testaments?
In the final episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” there remains uncertainty about what will unfold, given the numerous characters involved. It seems likely that the United States will continue its offensive against Gilead, while Gilead rebuilds in response. June hasn’t yet managed to free Hannah, so the finale may depict her making another attempt. Since all the characters are still within Gilead, they might try to flee as Gilead moves to reinforce its borders.
In the final episode, we can expect to spend considerable time establishing “The Testaments,” which is the sequel to “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Hulu has confirmed that they will be creating a series based on Margaret Atwood’s book, so Aunt Lydia and other significant characters like Gilead are likely to receive attention in the finale of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” laying the groundwork for future events in the story.
