Peter David, the renowned and Eisner Award-winning author who wrote The Incredible Hulk for a remarkable 12-year period, which is often referred to as his “masterpiece,” has tragically passed away at the age of 68. His wife, Kathleen O’Shea David, shared this sad news on social media yesterday. The cause of death was not disclosed, but it’s known that he had multiple health issues in recent years, such as kidney failure, a series of strokes, and a mild heart attack according to his GoFundMe page that was initially started in 2022 and reopened in 2025.

Kathleen posted on Facebook that Peter David tragically passed away last night. We’re all in shock and will share more information as soon as I can gather my thoughts.

Kathleen has regularly updated her GoFundMe campaign, which has gathered over $100,000 out of its target $150,000 from more than 2,500 donors. The GoFundMe was reinitiated because of escalating medical bills and living expenses. In a post on March 13, Kathleen expressed that the funds raised would be utilized to cover our ongoing bills, bringing comfort to both her and Peter.

As stated on GoFundMe, David has recently lost Medicaid coverage, which had been providing for his long-term disability care. On March 18 and May 12, he underwent fistula surgery. Unfortunately, Kathleen reported on May 18 that David was admitted to the ICU with a severe case of bilateral pneumonia. Since the launch of the GoFundMe in November 2022, this is the worst state David has been in.

On May 20th, Kathleen shared a closing report stating that David had been intubated and was kept lightly sedated because he couldn’t cough or clear his throat on his own.

Starting from September 23, 1956, David’s career with Marvel Comics took off in the Direct Sales Department where he served as the manager for five years. During this time, he collaborated with Jim Owlsey, later known as Christopher Priest who wrote Black Panther, to propose ideas for Spider-Man stories. Assigned to ‘Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man’, David scripted a four-issue storyline called the Death of Jean DeWolff. This arc featured a black-suited Spider-Man and Daredevil battling one of David’s early collaborations: Stan Carter, the Sin-Eater. Alongside this, he jointly created the Spider-Man villain, the Foreigner, who became a regular adversary during his tenure on ‘Spectacular’. The Foreigner also made his live-action debut in the 2024 movie ‘Kraven the Hunter’, played by Christopher Abbott.

Back in 1987, editor Bob Harras gave David the opportunity to write The Incredible Hulk comics when no one else was interested. In his 2004 introduction for Marvel’s Hulk Visionaries: Peter David Vol. 1, David mentioned this event. He stated that when he began scripting duties for The Incredible Hulk #328, there was no strategy or intuition behind it; Bob Harras wasn’t betting on a memorable outcome.
