Miley Cyrus holds sobriety dearer than anything else in her life.
Five years since the former Hannah Montana star announced her attempt at living sober in 2019, she provided updates about her sobriety progress.
In her May 21 Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe, she shared this insight: “Over the years, I’ve discovered that sobriety plays a vital role in my life. It’s almost like my guiding principle. I cherish it, and it has transformed every aspect of my existence.
In a 2021 reflection, Miley (who admitted to relapsing during the pandemic in a 2020 interview), looked back at her persona during the Plastic Hearts era, a time that straddled her current self.
She explained, “I was almost with the person sitting here currently, but life still had more lessons to share. There were more lessons for me to learn. I knew I needed one more fall, and it wouldn’t have happened in this way if I hadn’t been here. In the interval between the last time and now, there were tough times that I’m not proud of, and they certainly weren’t among my finest moments or best work.
However, Miley wouldn’t change anything about the ebbs and flows.
She shared that the events culminated in her composing ‘Flowers,’ a piece that seemed to unlock the pathway to healing for her. It brought about profound healing within her.
In the year 2020, she shared that she needed to rebuild her efforts towards maintaining sobriety from scratch.
She stated, “I’m two weeks into my sobriety now and it feels like I’ve truly embraced this change. Instead of getting angry with myself, I encourage you to be inquisitive. Ask yourself, ‘What led to this situation?’ rather than harboring anger.
At the time, Miley also emphasized that sobriety is her own uphill battle.
She added, “Not everybody needs to abstain from alcohol, but it’s important for each person to choose what’s right for them. For me, I don’t object to drinking, but I struggle with the choices I make when I consume more than is good for me.

Last October 2018, the actor famed for American Pie shared on Instagram that he had been sober for a year, expressing joy and encouragement in his message.
5 years back, he attempted to quit his alcohol and drug addiction as the burden of his excessive indulgence grew unmanageable for him. He penned down that it turns out quitting this habit is tough.
He went on saying, “Despite some initial hiccups, I’ve successfully maintained one year without alcohol, an accomplishment I hold dear among all my achievements. For those who are battling the same struggle, remember there is always support available. Never let embarrassment stand in your way. Together, we can overcome.
Looking back, I can’t help but ponder over my battle with addiction and the great depths I plunged to conceal my turmoil.
Or, in another way:
Reflecting on the past, I cannot help but revisit my personal fight against addiction and the extraordinary measures I took to mask my internal strife.
As a lifestyle advisor, I’m currently engaging in therapy sessions to address various aspects of my life. During one of those therapeutic moments, I found myself leaving a particularly productive session and making an unfortunate choice. I ventured to the liquor store, purchasing a fifth of vodka, consuming it, and then driving myself home. This revelation was shared on an episode of Jenny Mollen’s All the Fails podcast in March 2024. In those moments, I was seeking an escape from my feelings, finding solace in intoxication that allowed me to momentarily detach from the present and avoid confronting emotions head-on.
He remarked, “I had everything planned perfectly. I made sure not to drink so much that I couldn’t engage in a conversation with you. In fact, I kept refilling the bottles at the bar frequently.
The two-time winner of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Cup has openly discussed her past abuse of Adderall as a means of coping with injuries during her time playing soccer in college.
In a 2025 episode of the Question Everything with Danielle Robay podcast, I admitted that I had developed an unhealthy addiction to Adderall and abused it excessively. I found myself taking it constantly, even going for days without sleep. It was a wild ride, and I felt as if I was putting my health at risk, potentially giving myself a heart attack. My misuse of the drug was severe; I would crush it and snort it, and looking back, I can see how problematic that behavior was.
However, in the midst of her struggle, her college coach Anson Dorrance was there to support her.
Speaking from personal experience, the situation became incredibly challenging and required significant modifications on my part. At times like these, Anson would recommend immersing myself in literature. One such book that made a profound impact was “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Viktor E. Frankl. This book delves into the topic of suffering, offering insights on how to reframe it. Reading this life-changing text has undeniably transformed my perspective and enriched my journey.
The Valley star shared his decades-long battle with drugs in March 2025 after going to rehab.
During the March 4 episode of Bravo’s Hot Mic podcast, Jax revealed, “I’m admitting that I’m a drug addict. My main struggle is with cocaine. It’s tough to verbalize this truth.
He mentioned, “I’ve had periods of struggling with this issue, starting from when I was 23 years old. Now that I’m 45, I can say that there have been stretches where I managed to avoid it, but there were also times when I found myself getting deeply involved in it again.
Apart from quitting cocaine, Jax has also chosen to abstain from alcohol. He expressed, “I’m not sure if I have an alcohol problem per se, but they often go together. I can’t use cocaine without drinking as well. Therefore, I decided to give up both. I am happy to announce that I have been sober for 82, 83 days now, which is the longest stretch in my life without either substance.
In 2022, the actor who played Spider-Man in “No Way Home” decided to quit drinking alcohol as he felt like it had control over him, stating, “I was indeed addicted to alcohol, and I won’t deny that.” He further added on the “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast that anyone who drinks a beer daily might have a problem with it.
Oh my gosh, there comes a time when I find myself thinking, “Whoa, I wish I hadn’t had that final round,” as the actor went on. The next thing I know, I’m groaning with a throbbing headache.
After adopting this new lifestyle, Holland found that he was able to enjoy improved sleep quality and manage problems more effectively.
He confided, “Issues that used to upset me when they occurred on set, I was able to handle with ease now. My mental focus improved significantly, and I felt more robust in both mind and body.
In a more casual tone, we could say: The main character from “The Hunt for Red October” rarely discusses his 40-year-long struggle with sobriety, keeping it largely private.
In his podcast interview in May 2024, he mentioned that he doesn’t talk about this topic frequently, but occasionally when it’s appropriate. He clarified that he has been sober for 39 years, since February 23, 1985.
In 1983, Alec shared his experiences after relocating from New York City to Los Angeles, stating, “For two years following the move, I faced an intense struggle every single day. It felt as if I inhaled a mountain of cocaine, stretching from Earth to Saturn. We brought it home with us. Essentially, cocaine was like coffee in those days – everyone was using it all hours of the day.
And after quitting the drug, he soon turned to alcohol—only to also quit that dependency.
Today, he relies on the city around him.
He mentioned that New York holds a calming effect for him, as if discovering it anew each time. He strolls around, taking in sights he’s never seen before – such as unique architectural details on buildings that had previously gone unnoticed. He spends leisurely times with friends over meals and coffee.
Back in April 2024, the actress from “The Princess Diaries” announced that she has been sober for over five years. In an interview with the New York Times, she expressed that this achievement represents a significant milestone for her by saying, “This feels like a major accomplishment to me.
Her understanding was straightforward. She admitted, “I sensed all along it wasn’t suitable for me.” And it seemed excessively challenging to express, ‘But nothing at all?’ Yet, nothing at all. If you have an allergy or experience a severe reaction to something, you don’t debate it. So I stopped debating it.
She expressed her contentment for having taken that course of action. She further stated, “Personally, I find things are improved.” In other words, it served as a stepping stone for me. However, I dislike dwelling on negative feelings.
During her acceptance speech for the 2018 Woman of the Year Award at the Peggy Albrecht Friendly House, a home helping women overcome substance and alcohol addiction, Moore discussed the self-damaging trajectory that almost halted her professional progression.
As an ardent enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on the pivotal instances in our lives that mold us into who we become and the paths we choose. In the early stages of my journey, I found myself careening towards a self-destructive abyss, a downward spiral despite any accomplishments I may have achieved. Regardless of the accolades, I always felt inadequate, never quite good enough.
My self-worth was nonexistent, and this destructive trajectory swiftly propelled me towards a critical juncture where the reasons were unclear at the time. It could have been divine intervention, a higher power steering my course back on track.
As a lifestyle guide, I’d like to share a transformative moment in my journey that I owe to two individuals who were virtually strangers to me. They extended an unexpected yet firm push when they presented me with a choice: either change my ways drastically or face the inevitable consequences. In their words, “Unless you’re dead, you better show up.” This statement served as a wake-up call, offering me a precious opportunity to rethink and redirect the trajectory of my life before it crumbled into pieces.
Moore pointed out that they perceived more about him than he did about himself. He expressed his immense gratitude for this insight as it was crucial – had they not recognized him, had they not believed in him, he would not be here today.
In 2022, Cyrus revealed that she’s been recovering from her Xanax addiction since 2020. She explained to Rolling Stone that the drug provided structure during a time when she desperately needed it, as she didn’t want to be idle and consumed by her thoughts. She also shared that it offered her hope.
The singer commented, “When I discovered I could momentarily mute the world and dull your sorrow, that’s when it ended.
She mentioned that her companions back then seemed to tacitly approve of her drug habit, which eventually turned into a deep, endless abyss. However, during the pandemic, Cyrus observed difficulties and felt emotionally disconnected. “I was constantly falling asleep,” she reminisced, “unable to maintain consciousness or keep my eyes open, as I had sunk so deeply.
She eventually sought help and noted that “it took some time to get on my own two feet.”
16 years had passed since the former star of “Parenthood” had abstained from alcohol, but in 2020, following a motorcycle accident, they resumed using Vicodin.
Over the past eight weeks or so, he mentioned during his “Armchair Expert” podcast, “I’ve been using them quite frequently throughout the day, and I can do so because I have a valid prescription. However, I also take additional doses beyond what my prescription specifies.
He went on to express his dislike for the situation, admitting he was deceiving others. He acknowledged the need to stop but found himself rapidly growing accustomed to a daily intake of eight 30-milligram doses. This amount, he knew, would lead to a severe withdrawal, causing him great fear and leaving him feeling isolated. He carried a heavy burden of secrecy.
In 2018, the actress who starred in Halloween opened up about her decade-long struggle with opiate addiction that started in the late ’80s following a minor cosmetic surgery for her inherited puffy eyes. This prescription drug altered the course of her life significantly. “For ten years,” she confessed to People, “I was stealing and scheming. Nobody knew, nobody did.
1998 summer, when my beloved sister graced our home with her presence and carried painkillers prescribed for her rib injury, I reached the lowest ebb of my existence. As I confessed to the media outlet, tears welling in my eyes, I couldn’t help but recall that moment. In the guest room closet, I knew those opiates were hidden within her suitcase. I succumbed to temptation, taking them all before she departed. When she was preparing to leave, I knew she would discover her missing pills. I felt compelled to confess and wrote a heartfelt note, leaving it on her suitcase. Upon returning home that day, my sister wrapped me in her arms, expressing her love and concern for me, voicing her reluctance to stand by as I self-destructed.
On February 3, 1999, she participated in her first meeting and also confided in her filmmaker spouse, Christopher Guest, about her battle. He found it hard to believe he hadn’t seen any signs of this, Curtis noted, mentioning that she has remained sober since then.
In 2021, Barrymore announced a significant achievement in her recovery journey. She shared on CBS Mornings that it had been two and a half years since she last consumed alcohol, stating, “For the first time in a while, I’m going to say this: I have not had a drink of alcohol in two and a half years.” She explained that giving up alcohol was not beneficial for her life.
She commented, “It’s hilarious yet touching. When we expose our identities, our secrets, and the achievements we’ve strived for, it feels incredibly freeing and exposed simultaneously.
Later on, Barrymore clarified to the Los Angeles Times that she refrains from using the term “sober” as she doesn’t wish for others to perceive her as a “perfectly pious Puritan.
In 2023, she reflected, “I had been telling myself, ‘I’ll get a handle on this, I’ll find the solution,'” but eventually, it dawned on her, “The truth is, I’ve never truly mastered this skill, and probably never will.
During the 2000s, the actor from “A Star Is Born” faced struggles with cocaine addiction. Eventually, his friend Will Arnett intervened by addressing his problematic behavior directly.
During his 2022 interview on the Smartless podcast, Cooper clearly remembered that moment as the time when he first acknowledged his struggle with substance abuse, an event he would never forget.
Cooper stated that Arnett served as the catalyst for his sobriety. He explained, “Arnett bravely initiated a challenging discussion with me, which ultimately led me to contemplate and eventually decide to transform my life.
In simpler terms, the star of Fight Club battled alcohol addiction for quite some time before being helped to overcome it by Cooper. He shared this during his speech at the 2020 National Board of Review Annual Awards, where he received a trophy from Cooper. He expressed that every day since then has been happier.
In September 2023, the former star of “Cruel Intentions” posted on Instagram that it had been the longest period since his teenage years when he hadn’t used some form of nicotine or cannabis (along with other substances) in his system.
He also expressed his gratitude for the liberation that accompanies overcoming addictions and eliminating the need for substances, stating, “Achieving sobriety, gaining clarity, and strengthening my spiritual bond brings a wonderful sense of well-being.
In 2018, during her tour, the singer joyfully marked six years of abstinence from alcohol. Later in the same year, she astonished fans by releasing the candid song “Sober,” which disclosed that she had experienced a relapse.
She apologized, singing, “Mom, I’m truly sorry I’m no longer in control / Dad, please find it in your heart to forgive me for the spilled drinks on the floor / To those who have always stood by me, we’ve faced this challenge before, I’m deeply sorry, I’m not in control anymore.
A month later, Lovato was hospitalized for a near-fatal overdose.
Two weeks ago, she posted on Instagram, “I’ve been honest about my struggles with addiction from the start.” What I’ve discovered is that this disease doesn’t simply vanish or weaken over time; it’s an ongoing battle I’m still working to conquer. Right now, I need to take a step back, concentrate on my sobriety, and embark on my healing journey. The support you’ve all given me will never be forgotten, and I eagerly await the day when I can declare victory over this challenge. I’ll continue to fight.
In 2018, she spoke about her struggles with addictions to both sex and alcohol. “My addictive tendencies are not constant; they shift and change,” she explained. She admitted that during her younger years, there were periods where she may have had a sexual addiction as she believed that everything could be resolved through sex. She also opened up about recognizing her problem with alcohol consumption.
She shared that she hit rock bottom when she was alone in the house, with two bottles of wine already consumed and reaching for a third. She paused and said, “Wait a minute. Here you are, all alone in this house, drinking your third bottle of wine? This could be a sign of trouble.
She explained, ‘I quit suddenly, without gradual reduction. That’s just my style. I tend to dive in headfirst and need to be careful not to get carried away. I can easily become absorbed in things.’ She went on, ‘It’s not the action itself that matters, but the reason behind it. The motivation. It’s the behavior connected to it. If you enjoy having a lot of sex, that’s fine, but ask yourself why you’re doing it so much. That’s what you should consider.’
As a die-hard Backstreet Boys fan, I can’t help but share this personal revelation: One of the band members took his first dive into the drug world before filming our iconic “The Call” music video back in 2000. In a candid conversation with Good Morning America years down the line, he confessed that he was literally bouncing off the walls during the shoot! But here’s the silver lining: He found sobriety in 2021 and reaped a multitude of positive outcomes within just a year. Among them, shedding an impressive 32 pounds over seven months by ditching alcohol and fast food from his lifestyle.
In September 2022, he explained to Today that while drinking led to weight gain, it also negatively impacted his mental health.
As a follower who values transparency, I’d like to share my personal experience: Following the tragic passing of Mac Miller, rapper Shad Moss (also known as Bow Wow) took to Twitter to warn his fans about the dangers of cough syrup addiction. In his tweets, he admitted that during the time he worked with Omarion on their album and when he appeared on BET arguing with Torae, he was high on lean every day. His attitude and relationships suffered as a result, and even his family turned against him.
He confessed that he was addicted to lean throughout the UCP tour with Chris Brown, consuming 4-Hydrocodone concoctions at least 7 times a day. This addiction led to him passing out during shows, which caused him to miss performances in Chicago and Baltimore. He nearly lost his life due to this habit, which he admits he took up to fit in.
He urges everyone to kick these harmful substances, emphasizing the importance of being a good child, striving to be the best version of oneself, and speaking out more about the dangers of drug abuse. He stresses the need to protect the youth from early deaths and encourages parents to keep a close eye on their children, explaining the risks involved. In conclusion, he advises everyone to break the cycle of following trends and encourages peace among young artists worldwide.
2018 saw a great deal of candor from the singer, as she released both her fourth studio album titled “No Shame” and memoir called “My Thoughts Exactly.” During this period, she openly discussed the peak of her addiction struggles. As per Allen’s account, she was heavily consuming cocaine and alcohol to a point where she describes herself as being “pathologically drunk.” Eventually, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin felt compelled to stage an intervention following an incident at Kate Hudson’s Halloween party, where the singer accidentally headbutted Orlando Bloom and fainted.
In conversation with The Guardian, she expressed, “I felt nothing could resonate or fulfill me. One morning during those difficult times, I contemplated, ‘Perhaps heroin would be the solution, as nothing else appears effective.’
Throughout the 1980s, the actor who starred in The Parent Trap struggled with a cocaine addiction that eventually led him to rehab in 1990. In a later interview on Today, he shared that he grew up during the ’60s and ’70s when there was a significantly different viewpoint about the drug.
In 2018, he openly acknowledged that his daily routine during the 1980s often involved using cocaine. He also confessed that he would plead with God to take away his addiction, promising never to do it again, but would then relent just an hour before work. However, in the afternoon, he would think, “It’s not so bad.” This can be rephrased as: In 2018, he admitted that he was a near-daily user of cocaine during the 1980s. He would often find himself begging God to help him quit, only to resume his habit just before work, but in the afternoon, he would think that it wasn’t so bad.
He shared an intense moment he referred to as a ‘white light experience’, during which he felt like he was either dead or about to lose everything that mattered to him deeply. Overwhelmed by this, he needed to sit down and discuss it with his then-fiancée, Meg Ryan. Afterwards, he decided to seek help and ended the relationship with his addiction to cocaine.
Following an occurrence at a Newport Beach hotel where Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte attempted to break down his own room door, it was revealed in 2018 that Lochte decided to seek treatment for alcohol addiction. His representative stated to TopMob News: “Ryan has struggled with alcohol dependency for quite some time now, and unfortunately, this struggle has taken a destructive turn for him. He recognizes the need for professional intervention to conquer his issue and will be receiving help forthwith.
Ryan understands that overcoming this illness is crucial for him to avoid making unfavorable choices in the future, to strive to be the best husband and father he can possibly be, and if he aims to regain his dominance in the pool during the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
Despite understanding that it’s generally advised against, getting sober for someone else isn’t the norm, nonetheless, the former star of “Parenthood” found his decision to quit drinking significantly influenced by his relationship with Melanie Lynskey, which eventually led him to abstain from alcohol.
He shared in an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show in March 2023, “At some point, I realized how extraordinary she was and believed she would be perfect for someone truly deserving. However, I didn’t think I was that worthy individual, I felt a bit unstable.
However, as Ritter noted to TopMob News, he now sees that sobriety is ultimately a personal choice.
In the beginning stages of their relationship, he found it simpler to claim that his actions were for her because, at that moment, he felt his self-worth wasn’t high. He didn’t value his own wellbeing as much as he valued avoiding causing pain to her. Consequently, it was more straightforward for him to assert, ‘I’m doing this for her.’ However, now, he is acting for his own sake.
For nearly ten years now, the famous country artist has maintained sobriety, but his journey to this point was a challenging one. His struggle with alcohol and pain medication started shortly after he graduated from high school and persisted even as his career flourished. He confessed that he always carried a black leather laptop bag containing bottles of Jagermeister or vodka within easy reach. According to him, every hour and a half to two hours would call for two or three strong swigs from the bottle. Every three or four hours, he’d need a couple of pills. This information was shared with People.
He confessed that it didn’t hinder his achievements in any way. “I wasn’t fumbling about aimlessly,” he stated. “I was operating efficiently, even composing more melodies back then than I do currently. That aspect was what made me apprehensive.
In late 2011, he ended up in the hospital due to pancreatitis, and was warned that if he continued drinking, he might not live to see his next birthday. Despite this, he attempted to moderate his habits on his own, thinking things like, “Okay, I’ll only allow myself to take two pills today. I’ll only drink this much from my bottle and make a mark on the bottle,” as he remembered. However, these efforts would last for just a few days before someone would organize a party.
Eventually, he realized he needed assistance and checked into rehab on December 18, 2011. “I reached a point where I understood it was something beyond my capabilities alone,” Gilbert explained. “It infuriated me immensely and left me feeling ashamed. Despite being a determined individual, this was the one aspect of my life that I couldn’t manage.
