In James Gunn’s version of Superman, it appears that David Corenswet’s Clark Kent may not have many adversaries initially. Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor is set to be the primary antagonist in the upcoming DC movie, with support from María Gabriela de Faría’s Engineer. Furthermore, two enigmatic masked characters are expected to create chaos: one wearing golden armor (depicted in the latest Superman trailer) known as the Hammer of Boravia, and another clad in black whose identity was previously unknown. However, today we learned more about this mystery character through Superman merchandise.
Although it’s about two months until Superman hits the big screen in 2025, merchandise related to the film is already appearing in stores. Among these items are action figures, and one of them showcases the masked character in black, who DCU Updates has revealed as “DC’s Ultraman.” This nickname makes sense given the U chest insignia on the figure, and adding “DC’s” to the name likely serves as a legal distinction since there is another character named Ultraman from Japan.
More Superman Coverage

For quite some time, Lois Lane has graced the screens in Superman films. However, I must say, James Gunn’s reboot provided a moment with the character that I found particularly captivating.
James Gunn Just Debunked A Popular Lex Luthor Theory, And I’m Relieved
It’s not the first time rumors have surfaced that James Gunn’s Superman reboot might introduce a character called Ultraman. As far back as April 2024, there were whispers that Corenswet was also being considered for the role of Ultraman, a Kryptonian hero clone created by Lex Luthor in this version’s storyline. To be honest, I wasn’t keen on the idea of Ultraman’s adaptation back then, and I still feel the same way now.
To clarify, I have no issue with introducing a formidable, masked character in black who could potentially challenge Superman in a fight. However, I’m not fond of the name “Ultraman.” Historically, in DC comics, “Ultraman” is an evil counterpart of Superman from Earth-3 who leads the Crime Syndicate of America. If you’re planning to create a new character with similar traits, it would be better to choose a different name instead of using Ultraman, which has a distinct meaning in DC lore.
It seems that the matter has been settled for now, but as I mentioned before, I’m hoping there’s more to it than what we see at face value. There’s no doubt in my mind that Ultraman’s mask will come off at some point during Superman, and if that happens, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he turns out to be a different DC character altogether, with the Ultraman name being a red herring. If the first DC Universe movie is indeed following the clone storyline, then it would make sense for us to see a portrayal of Bizarro, who, given his connection to Lex Luthor in various tales, seems more suitable for such a role.
I’m eager to discover more about Ultraman’s background, one way or another, when Superman hits the cinemas on July 11. If you’re keen to catch up on older Superman films and TV series before its premiere, you’ll need a Max subscription.
