A beloved sitcom star has died.

It is with sad news that we confirm George Wendt, famously known for his role as Norm Peterson on the cherished NBC sitcom ‘Cheers’, passed away tranquilly in his sleep at his residence on May 20th. He was 76 years old.

George was a devoted family person, cherished by many as a trusted friend and confidante. A relative shared this about him: “He left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.” His absence is irreplaceable.

Starting his comedy career at The Second City in the 70s, Wendt then moved on to TV roles in shows like Soap, M*A*S*H, Making the Grade, and finally Cheers, which aired from 1982 to 1993 for a total of 11 seasons. During this time, he starred in all 275 episodes and received six consecutive Primetime Emmy nominations for his role as an outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series.

After wrapping up the series, the comedian subsequently took on roles in various shows. In 1995, he starred in the short-lived “The George Wendt Show”. He later made notable guest appearances on “Saturday Night Live”, “Sabrina the Teenage Witch”, and “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”. In 2002, he reprised his role as Norm Peterson in the “Cheers” spinoff, Frasier, as well as on “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy”.

Apart from his long-running stint on TV, Wendt has also acted in several movies throughout his career, such as “Airplane II: The Sequel”, “The Little Rascals”, and “Spice World”. He was also prominently seen in the introductory scene of Michael Jackson’s 1991 music video “Black or White.

Apart from his personal achievements in show business, it’s worth noting that Wendt was the uncle of Saturday Night Live alumnus Jason Sudeikis. In one of his last interviews, he expressed high regard for him.

On the Still Here Hollywood podcast in June, Wendt remarked, ‘He’s an exceptional young man. I’m really proud of him. Not just his achievements, but also because he’s genuine, intelligent, and considerate. If you’ve read about him, you’ll know what I mean.’
