Lindsey Vonn will always keep those icy slopes near her heart.
After a six-month interval since the Olympic skier declared her comeback to the field, she revealed the motivating factor driving her choice to participate once more.
In her exclusive chat with TopMob News at Team USA’s Nonnas Experience on March 22, Vonn reminisced, “I now have a new knee and I feel healthy once more. The situation is unique this time as I’ve been out of retirement for five years.
Which, as she noted, gives her a “different perspective.”
At age 40, she stopped skiing in 2019 because of persistent knee issues. Four years after that, in 2023, Vonn underwent a partial knee replacement surgery. However, she didn’t express serious thoughts about coming out of retirement until September 2024. Yet, being older and more experienced, she felt drawn to attempt skiing again sooner rather than later.
She went on to say, “It’s more about adjusting my gear rather than learning something new. This process requires time, but unfortunately, I don’t have a lot of it. However, I believe I’ve managed to crack the code.
Certainly, the gold medalist has been honing her abilities, as she participated in two races last December. If you missed it, she kick-started her return to competition at the FIS Fall Festival and ended up placing 14th at the World Cup downhill championship towards the end of that month. Later in April, she secured second place at the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, demonstrating that her skiing prowess remains intact despite her time away from the sport.
In fact, Vonn isn’t letting her age dictate this new phase of her career.
She pointed out that numerical age doesn’t define our abilities or passions. In her opinion, there are numerous chances for us to pursue the things we enjoy, regardless of how old we are. Society often imposes constraints about when specific actions should be taken, but in truth, these limitations don’t actually exist.
She also believes that every athlete, despite their age, should “do what you love.”
“If you are determined, you work hard and your body’s working,” she added, “I’d say go for it.”
