For seven seasons, Max Greenfield graced our screens alongside Zooey Deschanel in the adored comedy “New Girl”. His character, Schmidt, the self-proclaimed ladies’ man, consistently delivered standout performances. This fan-loved series aired from 2011 to 2018, and it was known for its portrayal of a quirky group of L.A. roommates trying to find their way in life during their late twenties and early thirties. They experienced both triumphs and tribulations in their personal and professional journeys.
That year, Greenfield expanded his small-screen triumphs by joining the cast of “The Neighborhood”, a sitcom starring Cedric the Entertainer, Beth Behrs, and Tichina Arnold among others. The show is about a white Michigan family who relocate to a predominantly Black neighborhood in Los Angeles, resulting in a series of humorous mishaps. Greenfield’s comedic chemistry with Cedric has contributed to its underestimated popularity. Now, fans of “New Girl” have the opportunity to catch up on this enjoyable comedy series.
‘The Neighborhood’ Is a Fun Fish-out-of-Water Sitcom
Following the towering success of New Girl, Max Greenfield aimed for another round of laughter as the leading character in the 2018 sitcom The Neighborhood. In this role, the Emmy-nominated actor takes on the part of Dave Johnson, affectionately known as the “kindest man in the Midwest,” who, accompanied by his wife Gemma (Beth Behrs) and son Grover, ventures into a working-class neighborhood in Pasadena.
Next door to Calvin Butler, who owns an auto repair shop and has strong opinions about everything, as well as being cautious towards newcomers, live the Johnsons. Calvin suspects that Dave and his family might disturb the local community’s culture. In contrast, Calvin’s wife Tina is more open to the new neighbors. Dave, who is skilled at resolving conflicts, aims to win over Calvin not just for friendship but also to establish deep connections in the area.
Apart from being Greenfield’s second major comedy hit on TV, the sitcom also signified Cedric the Entertainer’s comeback to television after his notable roles in shows like “The Soul Man” and “The Last O.G.” featuring Tracy Morgan. Prior to this, Greenfield had made appearances in various shows such as “Veronica Mars,” “Ugly Betty,” “Greek,” and “Raising the Bar.” His breakthrough role as Schmidt in “New Girl” in 2009 was both memorable and career-defining, paving the way for him to delve deeper into sitcoms with “The Neighborhood.
Greenfield & Cedric Make Wholesome TV Magic
In the cheerful TV show, Greenfield and Cedric’s charming camaraderie captivated viewers right away, as Dave persistently tried to charm Calvin and win over his reluctant neighbor, even though he faced amusing resistance. The Johnsons seem out of place after moving from their quaint Midwest hometown to the busy city of Los Angeles, where Gemma landed her ideal job as a school principal at a private institution. However, the determined couple doesn’t let that stop them from adjusting to their new environment and developing friendships with the Butlers.
Spectators of Greenfield’s work have no shortage of recognizing him as the witty performer who consistently upstages with his side-splitting on-screen performances. Indeed, he proved his mettle when sharing the screen with comedic icon Cedric, producing some exceptional television gold. Initially, critics were less than impressed by The Neighborhood, finding its writing dull and the characters underdeveloped. However, viewers found delight in this light-hearted sitcom, appreciating it as a heartwarming comedy that provided a refreshing 30-minute respite from everyday life.
The series currently boasts a 74% Popcornmeter score and a 6.7 IMDb rating from viewers, despite its first season receiving a 24% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics initially. However, it has since garnered strong ratings and is now recognized as an underestimated television treasure. On the widely used review site, the general consensus among fans is that The Neighborhood aims to provide nothing more than amusement and laughter for its audience. Many applaud the heartwarming friendships between the characters, who are portrayed as relatable, everyday people one might encounter in real life.
The neighborhood series, which spans over seven seasons, is set to return for its eighth and concluding chapter in the 2025-26 television season. Known for its humor, this production has faced numerous challenges backstage, including the 2023 writers’ strikes, COVID-19, and frequent changes in executive producers due to creative differences. In an interview with Us Weekly in May 2025, Greenfield expressed his appreciation for the sitcom getting a fitting final season, referring to it as “a truly wonderful gift.” He further added:
It’s wonderful to have the chance to part ways in the manner we all desire. I’m genuinely thrilled about this upcoming final season, where everyone is aware of the show’s destiny, and I look forward to enjoying it with the fantastic people I’ve shared so many great moments with over the last seven-plus years.
