In the realm of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, horses may not emulate the intricate realism found in Red Dead Redemption 2, but this difference can sometimes transform gameplay into an exhilarating experience instead. Although it appears unjust to compare these two distinct entities, the unique characteristics they each possess are what truly sets them apart.
Re-immersing myself in Oblivion in 2025 through Oblivion Remastered has only intensified the contrast, as the original Elder Scrolls approach now feels like a relic from a bygone era – a testament to its timeless charm.
Among numerous factors causing these distinctions, we find the gameplay styles, storylines, and the role of the horse in question. However, when it comes to entertainment value, Oblivion Remastered outperforms RDR2 in significant areas that become noticeable once you compare them side by side. These differences are hard to ignore once noticed.
5. Oblivion Remastered’s Horses Are Great For Travel
The Horses Have Different Purposes
In Oblivion Remastered, the role of a horse is primarily for swift navigation across Cyrodiil. These equine companions can handle rough terrains effortlessly and outpace various game opponents. They also serve as a means to conserve your stamina, ensuring you’re prepared for combat when necessary. Essentially, horses in Oblivion Remastered are mainly used for travel purposes; they aren’t particularly effective in battle since you must dismount to engage enemies effectively.
Instead of settling for a regular horse, you have an option to enhance it to the speediest ones, including Shadowmere and Black Horse. Shadowmere is a unique horse that can defend itself when attacked, making it a truly exceptional ride. Being the top horse in the game isn’t easy, but someone has to do it, and Shadowmere was made for the part. She doesn’t have any weight limitations, so you can fully stock her with supplies and weapons. To access or remove items from her inventory, you need to first sedate her first.
In the game Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2), the horses play various roles, including carrying gear, enabling faster travel, and engaging in combat from horseback. This functionality carries over to Oblivion Remastered as well, where different horses have distinct attributes, and their prices reflect these differences. Unlike the diverse breeds of horses in RDR2 that may not all handle terrain equally well, every horse in Oblivion Remastered will excel at traversing various terrains.
4. Oblivion Remastered’s Less Realistic Looks Can Be Charming
Two Different Art Styles To Compare
In Red Dead Redemption 2, the horses are depicted in a way that feels incredibly authentic. They’ve captured the texture and motion of real-life horses quite accurately, aiming for an accurate representation. This adds to the immersive experience, making it seem as if you truly own a genuine horse. It’s one of those details that may not initially stand out, but once noticed, it becomes a notable advantage in the gameplay.
Instead, immersing oneself in a video game offers an exceptional chance to escape into a non-reality realm. And when it comes to this escapade, Oblivion Remastered is undoubtedly the ideal choice. Its horses exhibit a realistically lifelike demeanor, yet they retain a touch of whimsical appeal. Moreover, the renowned horse armor can infuse these steeds with far more character than a typical saddle.
In my perspective, the creators of Red Dead Redemption 2 opted for a realistic approach over imaginative flair. The attention to detail in the horses is truly remarkable, but it seems to limit the scope for creative exploration. However, after years of gaming trends favoring realism, the refreshing creativity of Oblivion Remastered is definitely something to admire.
3. Oblivion Remastered Horses Have Fewer Downsides
One Is Clearly The Winner Here
In the two games, the horse behavior varies significantly. For instance, in Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2), the horse’s actions can be quite unpredictable, especially if it hasn’t been properly trained. If it senses danger, it might suddenly throw you off its back and bolt away. This could lead to a frantic chase if you’ve loaded the horse with supplies. When left idle, they can be observed nibbling on bugs, defecating randomly, and tilting their ears towards sounds. Their stamina is limited, and if they run out of energy while in water, they drown.
On the opposite end of the scale, there are the “Oblivion Remastered” steeds I’ve grown quite fond of. These horses seem to possess an endless reserve of energy, never showing signs of fatigue, regardless of how vigorously they’re ridden. They can still sustain damage from falls and enemies, but with careful play, these incidents can often be avoided. What sets them apart is their ability to traverse water as well. Furthermore, they can fall ill and contract diseases, but fortunately, they recover over time or can be instantly healed using a Wayshrine Blessing.
In the games Red Dead Redemption 2 and Oblivion Remastered, horses behave differently in combat situations. While horses in Red Dead Redemption 2 will only stomp threats and won’t actively engage in fights, some horses in Oblivion will fight alongside you against your enemies. One such horse, Shadowmere, can be helpful during battles. You can obtain Shadowmere as a reward from Lucien Lachance upon completion of the Purification quest in the Dark Brotherhood questline.
In a battle, she won’t truly die but instead will faint if her health drops to zero. Later on, she’ll regain consciousness. To have her join your forces, just disengage her when an adversary attacks. She might not inflict much damage, but you can utilize her as a diversion to create an opportunity to outmaneuver the enemy.
Employing the Wayshrine Blessing grants not just a +110 enduring Fortify Speed enhancement but also mends any harm and illness. Unlike the authenticity of Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2), you can enchant your steed with diverse spells, such as a 100-point Fortify Acrobatics spell. This specific incantation empowers the horse to execute the water jump talent, leaping on water at its running speed. Interestingly, both games share a similarity: during conflicts, horses might bolt. If they perceive a threat, you may need to chase them in either game.
2. RDR2 Horses Can Be Harder To Acquire
Is The Cost Worth It?
In both Red Dead Redemption 2 and Oblivion Remastered, you’ll find various breeds of horses to acquire. Specifically, in Oblivion, there are eight different horse species for your choosing. Each type will possess unique abilities and prices that vary among them. Interestingly, under each category such as Bay Horses, Imperial Legion Horses, Black Horses, Chestnut Horses, Paint Horses, and White Horses, you’ll find a good number of horses listed.
In the game, Shadowmere, a widely recognized steed, belongs to the Black Horse classification. Known for her remarkable speed, she boasts an attack of 20 and can reach speeds up to 38. If not adorned in armor, her health stands at an impressive 500. Balancing benefits against drawbacks, while a horse’s initial cost starts at 500 gold, the potential earnings from looting a single bandit during gameplay can surpass this figure.
In the game Oblivion Remastered, it’s quite convenient to use a stolen horse, as long as you make sure to mount and dismount discreetly. If you’re aiming to save money but wish to steer clear of any legal entanglements, you might also find one for free at Weynon Priory, early in the main questline.

In Red Dead Redemption 2, I too can swipe a horse if I choose, but the game’s tougher bounty mechanism increases the challenge of traveling without spending a penny. There are constraints to stealing a horse and registering it at a stable. The prices for these equines start under $100 and climb higher. It’s clear that not all 19 horses are created equal, but most can handle their assigned tasks. The stats for each horse may fluctuate based on their coat color.
1. Oblivion Remastered Has Lower Maintenance Horses
From High-Maintenance To No Maintenance
In the context of Red Dead Redemption 2, you’ll find that caring for horses is a significant aspect of the game. The horses are portrayed as crucial entities, and harming one can lead to a decrease in honor. As you nourish, groom, and ride your horse, your connection with it deepens. This also helps the horse develop additional skills, which is essential if you aim to advance through the game with it.
Failing to enhance your horse’s abilities in Red Dead Redemption 2 might lead to complications during gunfights or confrontations, as the horse may throw you off or run away. This ties into the game’s realism, as real horses can behave similarly when not properly tended to. The more care you give a horse, the stronger the bond between you and it becomes.
In the game Oblivion Remastered, you can relax about your horse since it rarely bolts unless being pursued, and feeding isn’t required. Unlike in RDR2, this horse is quite low-maintenance. The last thing you want to ponder when embarking on dangerous quests is whether your horse has been fed or needs water. You mainly need to ensure it stays healthy and safe from enemies.
In the game, they possess a simple-to-handle character trait due to their low default setting, which makes them easier for you to control. However, this can sometimes lead to unexpected behavior during battles. Having such an aspect of simplicity in the complex world of Oblivion Remastered allows for a relaxing gaming experience where you can focus on other tasks as your horse manages itself.
