If you’ve been eagerly awaiting another Hunger Games movie installment, then luck is on your side! In June 2024, it was announced that Suzanne Collins would be publishing her fifth book in the series titled Sunrise on the Reaping. And just as fate would have it, on the same day, Lionsgate revealed plans to adapt the prequel into a film. This upcoming movie is set 24 years before the original Hunger Games novel and begins on the morning of the reaping for the 50th games.

Inspired by David Hume’s concept of implicit submission, Suzanne Collins shared in a press release that she was drawn to “the easiness with which the many are governed by the few.” She also delved deeper into the use of propaganda and the influence wielded by those who control the narrative. As she put it, “The question ‘Real or not real?’ seems more pressing to me every day.”

While fans can already read the novel (you can find more details here), they’ll have to wait a bit longer for the movie—specifically until November 2026. The book was published in March, but the film will take a substantial amount of time before it reaches theaters.

It’s not too shocking that the studio is planning to produce a sixth Hunger Games film given that the first five have grossed over $3.3 billion at the box office as mentioned in a recent press release from Lionsgate.

The appeal of these movies lies in their star-studded cast, which includes heavyweights like Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Stanley Tucci, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, and Donald Sutherland in the first four films: The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, Mockingjay part one and part two. For the fifth film, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Rachel Zegler, Tom Blyth, Viola Davis, and Hunter Schafer joined the franchise.

Several well-known actors have also pledged to participate in Sunrise on the Reaping, such as Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning, Ralph Fiennes, Maya Hawke, Jesse Plemons, Mckenna Grace, Whitney Peak, and Joseph Zada.

For a comprehensive look at what we currently know about The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, continue reading.

A little birdie, er mockingjay, revealed the movie will be released November 20, 2026.

This book serves as a precursor to “The Hunger Games” and unfolds 24 years before readers were introduced to Katniss Everdeen. The narrative begins on the morning of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. According to Suzanne Collins’ website description, “As dawn breaks on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, a wave of fear sweeps through the districts of Panem.” Haymitch Abernathy from District 12 is trying to keep his thoughts at bay about his prospects, focusing solely on surviving the day and being with the girl he adores.

In the role of Haymitch Abernathy from District 12, formerly played by Woody Harrelson in “The Hunger Games” movies, now steps into Joseph Zada.

However, it’s not the first time audiences have encountered Joseph on their screens. His previous work includes “We Were Liars,” “Invisible Boys,” “Total Control,” and “The Speedway Murders.

Actress Whitney Peak is portraying Lenore Dove Baird, Haymitch’s girlfriend, in the series. Through her career, she has graced various television shows such as the reboot of ‘Gossip Girl’, ‘Home Before Dark’, and ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’. Additionally, she has been featured in films like ‘Campfire Kiss’, ‘Molly’s Game’, and the upcoming sequel to ‘Hocus Pocus’.

On screen alongside District 12 tribute character Maysilee Donner, we find actress Mckenna Grace. Recognized by audiences for her onscreen evolution through roles in Disney’s sitcom Crash & Bernstein, soap opera The Young and the Restless, and film Gifted (which earned her a Critics Choice Award), Mckenna has also graced movies like I, Tonya, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Annabelle Comes Home, and The Bad Seed. Her television credits include The Haunting of Hill House and The Handmaid’s Tale, with the latter earning her an Emmy nomination.

In “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and its subsequent films, Philip Seymour Hoffman portrayed Plutarch Heavensbee, whereas Jesse Plemons is set to embody the future Head Gamemaker and rebellion leader in this upcoming movie.

Jesse Plemons isn’t joking around when it comes to his acting abilities. Over the course of his career, he has been nominated for an Oscar for his role in “The Power of the Dog” and has also received Emmy nominations for performances in “Love & Death,” “Black Mirror,” and “Fargo.” Interestingly enough, he met his long-term partner, Kirsten Dunst, on the set of “Fargo.”

His filmography includes a range of projects such as “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “The Irishman,” “Battleship,” and “Breaking Bad.

In the upcoming Hunger Games, Kelvin Harrison Jr. will portray Beetee, who is not only the victor of the 34th Hunger Games but also the father of tribute Ampert Latier from the 50th Games. Previously, Jeffrey Wright played this role in the Hunger Games movies. Many fans have already witnessed Harrison Jr.’s talent in various films and television series like Genius, Chevalier, Waves, Luce, and It Comes at Night. Additionally, they’ve heard his voiceover work in animated productions such as Mufasa: The Lion King.

Hearing that Maya Hawke is portraying Wiress, the District 12 mentor (previously played by Amanda Plummer in “Catching Fire”), could leave you so thrilled it’s like your world has been flipped! This talented actress, carrying on the legendary legacy of her parents Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, has already made a mark with her roles as Jo March in the TV adaptation of “Little Women,” Eleanor in “Do Revenge,” Anxiety in “Inside Out 2,” and Robin in “Stranger Things.

Previously played by the late Lynn Cohen in “Catching Fire”, the character of Mags, the former Hunger Games victor turned District 12 mentor, is now being played by Lili Taylor. A multiple Emmy nominee for her roles in “American Crime” and “Six Feet Under”, Lili Taylor has also starred in films such as “The Conjuring”, “Mystic Pizza”, “Say Anything”, and “I Shot Andy Warhol”.

Apart from District 12’s tributes, there’s Wyatt Callow, played by Ben Wang. This talented actor has also graced the screen in the latest Hunger Games film, as well as Karate Kid: Legends, the musical adaptation of Mean Girls, Good Egg, Sight, and American Born Chinese.

In the world of Panem, it’s now Ralph Fiennes who holds power as the dictator President Snow, a part that was earlier played by Tom Blyth in “The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” and Donald Sutherland in “Catching Fire” and both parts of “Mockingjay”.

Ralph Fiennes is a versatile actor who has been nominated for three Oscars, with his notable performances in “Conclave”, “The English Patient”, and “Schindler’s List”. He’s also been nominated for the BAFTA seven times, earning recognition for his work in “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, “Coriolanus”, “The Constant Gardener”, and “The End Of The Affair”, among others. In addition, he was nominated for an Emmy for his role in “Bernard And Doris”.

Molly McCann takes on the role of Louella, another character from District 12, which she has previously portrayed in various productions. Her impressive acting career spans across television shows such as “Bad Sisters,” “The Hardacres,” “The Boy That Never Was” and “Star Wars: Visions.” In film, she’s known for her work in titles like “Herself,” “Freelance,” “Never Grow Old,” and “Feed.

As a dedicated admirer, I’d like to introduce you to the striking resemblance of Louella – none other than Iona Bell. This captivating actress has graced our screens in films such as Fing!, Savage Flowers, and Frayed, and mesmerized us on TV shows like Mandrake.

It’s not entirely clear who will portray Effie Trinket this time around, although Elizabeth Banks played her in previous Hunger Games films. Interestingly, Elle Fanning has been cast to take on this character, who was a stylist for Haymitch Abernathy before the 50th Games in Sunrise on the Reaping.

Elle Fanning made her screen debut alongside sister Dakota Fanning in I Am Sam in 2001. She has since starred in numerous movies like Maleficent, Somewhere, Super 8, The Beguiled, and A Complete Unknown.

On the television front, Elle has acted in The Girl from Plainville and garnered an Emmy nomination for her role in The Great.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: Following Stanley Tucci’s captivating portrayal of Caesar Flickerman in the Hunger Games series, Kieran Culkin steps into the limelight to take on the role for future installments.

Kieran Culkin, who first graced the silver screen alongside his brother Macaulay in “Home Alone,” has built an impressive acting resume with roles in films like “Father of the Bride,” “She’s All That,” and “Igby Goes Down.” After a brief hiatus from the industry, Kieran returned to star in projects such as “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” “Infinity Baby,” “Succession,” and “A Real Pain,” earning him his first Academy Award.

Director Francis Lawrence has a well-prepared strategy under his belt, with prior experience directing films such as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Mockingjay parts one and two. Apart from this franchise, he’s also directed movies like Slumberland, See, and Red Sparrow starring Jennifer Lawrence, in addition to helming music videos for artists including Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, and Jennifer Lopez.

Besides being recognized within the franchise, Billy Ray is known for adapting the original film from Suzanne Collins’ novel. His other projects include “Terminator: Dark Fate”, “Flightplan”, and “Captain Phillips”, which earned him an Oscar nomination.

Meanwhile, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are producing “Sunrise on the Reaping”, while Cameron MacConomy is taking on the role of executive producer.
