This upcoming holiday season, the latest installment of “Avatar” is expected to return to cinemas, generating excitement for the third film. Directed by James Cameron, this blockbuster will have a second theatrical showing, approximately three years after its premiere, allowing fans to enjoy the movie in its optimal format once more.
Starting October 3, audiences can catch a special one-week run of the movie “The Way of Water” in theaters, with screenings taking place in IMAX. This decision was made following Lionsgate’s announcement that the release of their film “Michael,” originally speculated for an October premiere, has been postponed until 2026.
13 years after the release of the record-breaking movie Avatar, with global box office earnings of $2.92 billion, the sequel titled The Way of Water unfolds the next chapter in the Sully family saga, featuring Sam Worthington as Jake Sully and Zoë Saldaña as Neytiri. This story takes place 16 years after the Na’vi successfully thwarted the RDA’s threat. Living peacefully on Pandora with their family, Jake and Neytiri encounter a new menace from the returning RDA, led by human military commander Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), who was presumed dead in the first film but has been resurrected as a Recombinant. The Sully family faces unparalleled challenges and heartbreak in their struggle to defend themselves and Pandora, with the help of Neteyam (Jamie Flatters).
The Way of Water Broke Records and Sets Up an Emotional Threequel
The Way of Water, much like its predecessor, was warmly appreciated by critics (scoring 76% on Rotten Tomatoes) and set new commercial milestones during its opening phase. The follow-up film climbed onto the podium of all-time box office champions alongside Avatar, securing the third spot globally ($2.32 billion worldwide), and adding another feather to James Cameron’s cap by making him the creator of three of the top four highest-grossing movies ever (alongside Titanic). Additionally, after its debut on Disney+ in 2023, it became Disney’s most successful digital release to date.
In the third installment titled “Fire and Ash,” Worthington, Saldaña, Lang, Sigourney Weaver (Kiri), Britain Dalton (Lo’ak) and Kate Winslet (Ronal) reprise their roles. The movie follows the Sully family as they mourn the loss of Neteyam while confronting a new adversary, Ash clan leader Varang (Oona Chaplin). At CinemaCon in April, James Cameron hinted that this Avatar film, which takes place on Pandora, is the last one before the series moves to Earth for the next two sequels.
For a prolonged stretch, Cameron has been in New Zealand, fully engrossed in the post-production of his film titled “Fire and Ash”. Recently, this esteemed director disclosed certain details about it. Simultaneously, the head honcho at Disney announced…
Prior to its theatrical rerelease, fans have the chance to stream “The Way of Water” on Disney+. On December 19, “Fire and Ash” will be available in cinemas.
