The television series headlined by Oscar Isaac premiered in 2022, garnering favorable reviews from both viewers and critics. With an impressive RottenTomatoes rating of 86%, it is often recognized as one of the best shows within the Marvel Disney+ era. This leads to the question, why isn’t there more content produced for it?

Moon Knight‘s storyline concluded with a hint of suspense, as Jake Lockley, the third identity hidden within Moon Knight, was revealed during the mid-credits scene… but the narrative abruptly ended there. Since then, neither Moon Knight nor Isaac has made an appearance in the MCU, save for a brief cameo in the animated series “What If…?” Now, fans are beginning to wonder what’s next for these characters.

I recently had a chat with Jeremy Slater, the creator of Moon Knight, at the unveiling of Universal’s new Epic Universe park. When I inquired about a potential second season of the show, he suggested that I should discuss it with Kevin Feige and Oscar Isaac. He indicated that the decision is largely up to them, stating, “The ball is really in their court.” Slater mentioned that Moon Knight’s return depends on how much Oscar wants to be involved, and when Kevin Feige devises a plan to effectively incorporate Moon Knight into the broader Marvel storyline, we might see him again. However, Slater admitted that he shares our curiosity about whether or not we’ll see more of Moon Knight in the future.

In essence, there are challenges in getting the ball moving with Isaac and Feige, as Isaac is currently a sought-after actor with limited time for additional projects like another season of Moon Knight. Meanwhile, Feige is heavily invested in launching Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, what can be done about it?

Marvel Execs Are Confident Moon Knight Will Be Back

One issue is that Moon Knight isn’t easily integrated with other characters at the moment due to his supernatural origins contrasting with the current focus on multiversal/scientific elements in Marvel’s movies and shows. However, they could have been paired up – Blade and Moon Knight were once part of a team, the Midnight Sons. Unfortunately, that project is stuck in development limbo, much like a vampire that may never see daylight again.

Despite the challenges, I can’t help but feel that it wouldn’t do justice to this beloved character to let him fade into obscurity. Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum seems to share my sentiments as well.

In his February statement, it was mentioned that Marvel Television unfolded in stages, and Moon Knight was part of a series of shows designed to introduce characters who would be connected to future projects. However, priorities have since changed, and they are now producing shows that can be released annually, similar to traditional television. While I’d love a second season for Moon Knight, there are plans for him in the future. Fans might need to wait several years before he reappears, and it seems unlikely that he will feature in Avengers: Doomsday.

Moon Knight is streaming on Disney+.
