The movie was unveiled at San Diego Comic Con 2024, along with the surprising news that Robert Downey Jr. would reprise his role as the main antagonist, Doctor Doom. Initially, it was anticipated that Doctor Doom would debut in “Avengers: Secret Wars,” while earlier MCU films such as “Loki” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” had hinted at Kang the Conqueror as the main villain for the Multiverse Saga.
Although some people have expressed reservations about Robert Downey Jr.’s casting, there has been broad agreement regarding Kang’s substitution within the storyline. Given that Doctor Doom is one of Marvel’s most cherished antagonists, it makes sense to give him more room to grow before Avengers: Secret Wars. This approach allows Doom additional time to amass the power necessary to confront the overwhelming combined force of the heroes from the Multiverse Saga. In the first issue of “Doom,” it’s no surprise that Doom takes on the role of a hero battling the main antagonist, Galactus. Interestingly, he gains the strength required to confront this cosmic titan by receiving the combined force of the super soldier serum and the powers of a celestial. The comic also explores the complexities of Doom’s character, but it’s worth noting that Robert Downey Jr.’s suggestion for how Doom might gain such immense power could be drawn from this method, particularly since it mirrors one early concept in the Multiverse Saga movie series.
The MCU’s Current Setup After Eternals Means Giving Doctor Doom The Same Power Upgrade Would Make Sense
Eternals Elaborated On The Godlike Celestials
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), starting from Phase 2’s movie, Thor: The Dark World, the Celestials have made appearances that suggest them as some of the most powerful cosmic beings. They were even portrayed as “little g” gods in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. However, it wasn’t until Eternals, released in 2021, that they truly took center stage. In this film, we learned that these cosmic deities sow new Celestials into planets prior to a catastrophic event known as “emergence,” which gives birth to them and ultimately destroys the planet where they were sown.
Given that there’s no news about an Eternals sequel, it seems plausible that the backstory of the Celestials could be further explored in Avengers: Doomsday. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen a broader impact of the super soldier serum compared to its comic book counterpart, resulting in numerous MCU super soldiers, the Hulk, and perhaps even the Sentry. So, it could make sense that Doom’s genius would lead him to create a similar process that granted powers similar to those bestowed upon characters like the Hulk and Sentry, while also incorporating the blood of an emerging Celestial for unmatched power.
Doctor Doom Getting The Comic Power Upgrade Could Also Help The Story Of Avengers: Secret Wars
Avengers: Secret Wars Can Skip Introducing Beyonders
Adopting this strategy would not only allow Doom to connect with earlier MCU stories but also establish an engaging lead-up to Avengers: Secret Wars. The Secret Wars comics portray Doom at his peak, as the God Emperor Doom, the sovereign of Battleworld. In these stories, he gains this power from the Beyonders, almost omnipotent beings dwelling beyond the multiverse, following his creation of a homemade bomb using Molecule Men replicas and annihilating them with it.
Since the Multiverse Saga has not yet introduced the Beyonders or Molecule Men, there’s speculation about how closely Avengers: Secret Wars will follow these elements from the comics. However, if Victor Von Doom gains his powers from the Celestials instead, it would eliminate this requirement, as the Celestials are already established as godlike entities in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This could potentially mean that Avengers: Doomsday, hinted at by RDJ, may be heading in this direction for its storyline within the Multiverse Saga.
