ESPN’s Jay Harris Shares Prostate Cancer Diagnosis

Jay Harris is giving insight into his health battle.

A while ago, an ESPN host openly disclosed that he’s been diagnosed with prostate cancer in a heartfelt article aimed at increasing understanding and discussion about this health issue.

In his note posted on ESPN’s site on June 5th, he mentioned that his treatment plan initiates with surgery set for Tuesday, June 10th. After receiving his diagnosis, a PET scan showed no signs of spreading. Although this was reassuring, he realizes it doesn’t provide a definitive answer, and they will learn more once they perform the operation.

He expressed his wish, “I’m hoping there won’t be any additional issues discovered, allowing me to get back to work within a month or so, completely well.

And while Jay’s diagnosis was jarring for him to receive, he noted it was not totally unexpected.

He pointed out that prostate cancer is more prevalent among African American men. He himself had battled with this type of cancer but emerged victorious. Being 60 years old, he has always kept a close eye on this issue, discussing it annually with his doctor.

Indeed, Jay, being married to Stephanie Harris and having two grown children together, has taken care to impart the understanding of their potential genetic susceptibility to the disease.

He mentioned, “I’m passing everything on to my 26-year-old son.” He acknowledged that he might be revealing too much occasionally – laughing it off – but he feels it’s important for him to be informed.

During his diagnosis ordeal, Jay found solace in the supportive company of anchors Hannah Storm and Brian Custer, both of whom have shared their personal struggles with cancer. As he embarks on his own healing path, he aspires to offer similar comfort to others facing similar challenges.

He expressed that his intention behind sharing was to be part of those advocating for open discussions about this topic. Additionally, he hoped to offer some advice and readiness tips, just as others had done for him in the past.

Besides Jay, other celebrities have also utilized health scares to raise awareness. For instance, James Van Der Beek from “Dawson’s Creek” has publicly shared his 2023 colorectal cancer diagnosis as a means to motivate others to prioritize regular medical checkups.

Last year, he shared with People magazine that for some time, he had been privately handling a personal struggle. In the past, he found it beneficial and therapeutic to make his struggles public. He received a great deal of support as a result, but what truly mattered to him was increasing awareness about the issue.
