Moving forward from epic battles and massive adversaries, Eternal Strands is generating quite a buzz, and as its launch draws near at the end of this month, let’s delve into some crucial aspects you should be aware of.
SETTING AND STORY
In the mystical realm of the Enclave, a place once thriving with magical advancements, I find myself as Brynn, a young Weaver – a warrior skilled not only in wielding a sword but also unleashing powerful magical abilities. Alongside my fellow Weavers, we’ve ventured into the Enclave, seeking answers about its mysterious past and aiming to restore it to its former glory.
NOT NARRATIVE-DRIVEN
Yellow Brick Games, the creators behind Eternal Strands, have a rich background in story-focused games such as Dragon Age and Assassin’s Creed. However, contrary to expectations stemming from their narrative prowess, Eternal Strands is not following that path. In an interview with GamingBolt, Mike Laidlaw, the game’s creative lead, emphasized that the title prioritizes its gameplay aspects above all else, making it primarily a gameplay-driven experience.
He explained that the story serves as a framework for the player’s experiences, offering challenges, objectives, and opportunities for both combat and exploration enjoyment. Guided by this perspective, they made an early decision in development that Eternal Strands would not revolve around difficult moral dilemmas but rather focus on a journey of discovery, as a team of skilled individuals uncovers the secrets behind the Enclave’s fate.
OPTIONAL STORY CONTENT
In Eternal Strands, while the main focus might not be on the story, there’s a good amount of optional narrative content for those seeking more context. Game creator Laidlaw shared with GamingBolt that the game includes numerous dialogues (all voiced), which respond to Brynn’s journey, her discoveries, and other events. He further mentioned that these dialogues don’t affect game completion but are included to provide a richer, deeper experience for players who wish to explore the story more extensively.
ELEMENTAL ABILITIES
In “Eternal Strands”, the real-time battle system unfolds with a significant focus on close-quarters fighting. Yet, underlying this is an intricate elemental system. The protagonist, Brynn, is armed with a magical cloak known as the Mantle, enabling her to launch fire and ice attacks. Interactively, everything within the game world, whether in or out of combat, responds to heat and cold, inspiring players to creatively combine and explore various tactics.
TELEKINETIC ABILITIES
Similarly vital as Brynn’s elemental powers, she’ll be capable of summoning telekinetic magic against her adversaries. This talent allows her to seize and hurl various objects or items found in the environment as projectiles towards enemies, or maybe even utilize them to deflect incoming attacks. While the elemental systems will continue to be central to the gameplay in “Eternal Strands”, Brynn’s telekinetic powers are undeniably going to play a significant part as well.
BOSSES
In “Eternal Strands”, a lot of fascinating aspects have been highlighted, but what really stands out is the epic battles against colossal bosses. This action-packed adventure game will challenge players as they engage in numerous titanic confrontations throughout their journey. The developers at Yellow Brick Games have openly acknowledged “Shadow of the Colossus” as a source of inspiration for the game’s bosses, with a grand total of nine towering bosses to locate, scale, and conquer.
TRAVERSAL
In “Eternal Strands”, exploration and movement through the environment appears to be a significant focus, offering multiple methods for navigating the game world. To begin with, Brynn’s elemental and telekinetic powers are not only effective in battle but also serve as traversal tools, such as constructing ice bridges to cross large gaps. Additionally, similar to “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” and “Tears of the Kingdom”, the game allows for climbing any surface within the world at will.
PHYSICS SYSTEM
Yellow Brick Games takes great pride in the physics system of their game, Eternal Strands, which is integral to its systemic design. In this game, temperature and elements significantly impact the world – heat propagates, causing fires that can potentially spread out of control, while ice cools things down. The game’s mechanics will adhere strictly to these rules, making for a realistic and engaging experience, complete with real-time destruction effects.
WORLD
As a gamer, let me clarify that while I’m excited about Eternal Strands, it’s not an open-world game. Instead, it’s got a more focused, linear structure. However, don’t worry, there’ll be plenty to explore as you journey through the Enclave. The environments you’ll encounter will vary widely, from bustling urban landscapes to untouched wilderness, and Yellow Brick Games promises even more surprises. So, buckle up, it’s going to be a diverse and exciting ride!
INSPIRATIONS
Eternal Strands significantly draws inspiration from multiple games, with Shadow of the Colossus being most noticeable. As Laidlaw stated to GamingBolt, “Shadow of the Colossus influenced the grandeur of our adversaries.” Unlike Shadow of the Colossus where you could only defeat foes by striking specific weak points, Eternal Strands allows you to devise your own strategies for victory by utilizing magic and weapons.
Beyond just Shadow of the Colossus, this game draws influence from gems like Dragon’s Dogma and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. As for its atmosphere and visual aesthetic, Laidlaw mentions that Eternal Strands also finds inspiration in the realm of The Mummy and Game of Thrones.
LENGTH
From what I gather, “Eternal Strands” seems to offer a sizeable gameplay experience. According to Laidlaw, the action-adventure game is estimated to last around 25 hours on average. However, he also mentioned that there are numerous exploration opportunities and side quests available, which could significantly extend the total playtime as it can range quite broadly.
MUSIC
Eternal Strands boasts a talented roster of industry professionals, as mentioned earlier, and this is also true for its music. The game’s soundtrack is skillfully crafted by renowned musician and composer Austin Wintory, who has contributed to games like Journey, The Pathless, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Hades 2, among others.
PC DEMO
As someone who’s been intrigued by the enigma that is Eternal Strands, I understand if you’re hesitant about jumping right in. But here’s some exciting news! A demo for this game will be accessible soon, a week before its official launch on January 21. This demo will only be available on PC platforms. The best part? You can delve into the prologue and carry over your progress when you decide to fully immerse yourself in the game later. So, why not give it a spin and see if Eternal Strands is the adventure you’ve been waiting for?
COMING TO GAME PASS
If you found yourself thinking, “This seems like a great Game Pass title,” it’s worth noting that your assumption is correct. Yellow Brick Games has confirmed that the game will indeed be accessible to Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers at its release. Even those who are still part of the original Game Pass tier (which has been upgraded for new members into the Standard tier) will receive the game on its release date as well.
PC REQUIREMENTS
Running the game “Eternal Strands” on a PC won’t necessitate a high-end or power-hungry system. To play at minimum requirements, you’d need a processor like the i5-9400 or Ryzen 5 3350, coupled with graphics cards such as the GeForce GTX 1660 Super, Radeon RX 5600 XT, or Arc A580, and at least 8 GB of RAM. For a recommended experience, however, you’d require an i5-11600 or Ryzen 5 5600X processor, along with graphics options like the GeForce RTX 3070, Radeon RX 6800, or Arc A770, and 16 GB of RAM. Regardless of your chosen settings, you’ll also need an SSD and approximately 24 GB of available storage space.
