Eurovision confirms 2025 host city in Switzerland

As a music enthusiast who has followed Eurovision for decades, I am genuinely thrilled that Basel will host the 2025 edition of this beloved song contest. Having witnessed the first-ever Eurovision in Lugano back in 1956, it brings me immense joy to see Switzerland once again take center stage in the world of music.

The official announcement has been made that the 2025 installment of the widely beloved song competition, Eurovision, will take place in a Swiss city.

In May, the nation triumphed with the help of non-binary artist Nemo, whose powerful song “The Code” dealt with their personal journey of accepting their identity.

The Code was enthusiastically received by both critics and audiences, amassing an impressive 591 points and making appearances in various European nations, even reaching the 18th spot on the UK charts.

It has been confirmed that Basel, located in the northwestern part of Switzerland, is the chosen site for Eurovision 2025. The announcement was made through a thrilling video posted on the ESC (European Song Contest) YouTube channel.

The clip acknowledged Switzerland as “the birthplace of the Eurovision Song Contest”, having hosted the first ever edition in 1956 in Lugano, a city in the south located more than 250km away from Basel.

One significant distinction between Lugano and Basel lies in their primary languages; Lugano is primarily Italian-speaking, while Basel has stronger linguistic ties to both French and German.

Back in 1956, right here in Switzerland, a pledge was given to initiate a global television program that would honor music, camaraderie, and unity.

“Join us next year as we commemorate our shared commitment, in a vibrant city renowned for its music and artistic spirit!”

They added: “A city that breaks codes and where all people can feel safe and belong. A place where you can feel at home. Welcome to Switzerland. Welcome to Basel.”

2025 marks the start of the Eurovision Song Contest, with the first two rounds taking place on the 13th and 15th of May. The competition culminates in a grand finale on the 17th of May, promising an unforgettable conclusion.

In the upcoming events, the United Kingdom is eagerly anticipating an improved showing after Olly Alexander’s underwhelming performance at Eurovision, where he received a total of 46 points from the jury but unfortunately, zero points from the audience, resulting in a 18th place finish overall.

Eurovision returns next year.
