Evangelion x McDonald’s Figures: Resellers Steal the Spotlight!

In every community, resellers are a common sight, adapting to trends swiftly to capitalize on popular new projects within various fandom cultures. This practice is notorious in the gaming world, but anime has its share of resellers too – as demonstrated by the recent partnership between Neon Genesis Evangelion and McDonald’s. Their collaboration unveiled three unique mech figures: the Big Mac Unit 01, McDonald’s French Fries Unit 2, and McShake Unit 0, which are only available for a limited time.

According to Oricon JP reports, it appears that Japan’s reselling community may be impacting the sales of exclusive products. In December 2024, a lottery was held for a figurine set, with winners announced on January 16th, 2025. However, even before the official announcement, Japanese marketplaces and reselling platforms had already listed these figures for sale, priced between 12,000 to 20,000 yen. This is disappointing as the original set retails at just 3,900 yen, and it raises concerns that sellers may be listing items without actually having them in stock.

As per Mercari’s terms, a site offering the Evangelion x McDonald’s figures specifies that sellers are not allowed to sell items they do not physically possess in their inventory. This policy is implemented to safeguard buyers by allowing them to directly question the seller about the product and its state before making a purchase. Oricon reports that listings showcasing the new figures exclusively use images from the official promotion, along with snapshots of winners.

Netizens Speak Out Against Resellers Selling Evangelion Collab Products at a Premium

It appears that enthusiasts eagerly anticipating the collaboration are justifiably frustrated about the predicament. Since Mercari and other listings have been surfacing online, displeased “Evangelion” fans have been vocal in their attempts to caution fellow fans against purchasing the exclusive items at an inflated, unjust price. Comments range from expressions such as, “McDonald’s [Evangelion] lottery figures are being resold excessively on Mercari! The collection starts from the 20th, so anyone listing them prematurely should be reported for ‘item not in hand'”, to “McDonald’s, you should have known it would be resold… this is the worst”, and even a humorous sentiment like, “I wish they’d eradicate the McDonald’s [Evangelion] resellers.

In many fan communities, it’s now routine to find resellers ready to snatch up as much exclusive merchandise as possible, intending to increase prices later for profit. This annoying pattern exploits fans’ strong affection for a particular media, especially rare items such as the Evangelion McDonald’s figurines.
