Eve Hewson on The Perfect Couple, Bad Sisters and why she almost quit acting

Were you fond of your name, Memphis Eve Sunny Day Iris Hewson, as a child? I never really appreciated it myself because being unique wasn’t something I valued back then. My parents always told me that ‘Memphis’ was given to me because I was conceived in Memphis, or because I looked like Elvis with all that hair when I was born. I think they might have just made up those stories though.

Has your father ever shared some guidance on dealing with fame?

Have you reached that level of fame like J-Lo’s? Not quite for me yet, but when I do, I’ll definitely make sure to share the news with you.

Was it intimidating to star alongside Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, and Dakota Fanning in “The Perfect Couple”? Not necessarily. I was thrilled to take on the lead role, as that’s why I’m here. The concept of portraying an outsider joining this family and witnessing their eccentricities through my character Amelia’s eyes was intriguing. Amelia is quite frank, but the rest of the cast seemed to relish in their opportunity to dress up and act out.

What is your take on this series? It has a unique and eccentric atmosphere that sets it apart. The blend of drama and humor makes it stand out as a genre unto itself. Each character delivers an exceptional performance, and I believe the audience will find it irresistible. It’s an exhilarating, unpredictable journey they won’t forget.

How did it feel to potentially gain Nicole Kidman as a mother-in-law? Incredibly exciting! I had no clue about her involvement until my agents started mentioning this “Nicole.” My response was, “Nicole who?” When she appeared on set, everyone was filled with excitement. It’s truly inspiring to watch such a talented individual at work. She’s been in the industry for years, yet she never stops challenging herself.

The initial scene of the series features an intricately coordinated dance performance on a sandy beach. Let me share some details about that… We received a message saying, ‘You need to learn this dance before Christmas’. Everyone was puzzled, thinking, ‘What’s this? I’m contacting my agent!’ However, we ended up having a dance lesson with the choreographer of Dua Lipa. By then, we had become quite close, and it turned out to be the final scene we shot, under the warm sun on the beach, everyone grinning from ear to ear. It was our very own Mamma Mia! moment.

Hey there! I can’t help but rave about the captivating series “Behind Her Eyes” – have you given it a try yet? It was a massive hit, with an unexpected plot twist involving something quite intriguing: astral projection. You know that eerie sensation when you’re on the brink of falling asleep and feel yourself drifting away? If you seize that moment and instead sit up, they say that’s exactly what astral projection feels like! Quite fascinating, isn’t it?

After finishing the second series of Bad Sisters, do you think we’ve developed a genuine bond similar to that of sisters? I spent an entire weekend with them, and we even have a group chat on WhatsApp. Our relationship is quite close now.

At some stage, you contemplated leaving acting behind. This was due to a challenging experience on a movie set that left you questioning its purpose. You didn’t want to continue being subjected to such poor treatment. I imagine many actors have faced similar doubts at some point in their careers. It seems the profession can bring both joy and frustration, making it somewhat of a rollercoaster ride.
