According to Sony’s statement, they are contemplating raising the price of the PlayStation 5 further and potentially shifting production of the console to the United States due to tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.
In relation to their financial predictions for the upcoming fiscal year, Sony has projected approximately 100 billion yen (equivalent to about $680 million) in tariff costs. To offset these expenses, Sony Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao mentioned that the company is thinking about transferring the effect of these tariffs onto consumers by potentially increasing prices across all product lines, which includes but isn’t limited to the PS5.
In other locations, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki mentioned that it could be feasible to manufacture PS5 consoles within the United States. He stated that the production “could be localized”, and he considered this a smart approach to minimize the impact of Trump’s tariffs.
Unlike previous console generations that typically saw price decreases, the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S have experienced price increases since 2020. In fact, the PS5’s cost rose last month in the UK, Europe, and Australia, with an increase of £40 in the UK and €50 in Europe for the base PS5 Digital Edition. Furthermore, Sony has recently increased the cost of its PS Plus subscription service across various regions.
Today, Sony revealed that they have sold approximately 77.7 million PlayStation 5 (PS5) consoles since its debut in 2020. During their latest fiscal year, which ended on March 31st, 2025, they reported selling around 18.5 million units. At this stage, PS5 sales lag slightly behind those of the PS4 during its initial launch period. However, software sales are climbing higher, and Sony anticipates an increase in first-party sales going forward.
