Even the Emmys’ Hosts Made Fun of The Bear Being Considered a Comedy

As a seasoned TV enthusiast with a penchant for all things drama and comedy, I must say this year’s Emmy Awards have been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride! The winners list is a testament to the diversity and talent that the small screen has to offer.

The 2024 Emmys got underway with Dan Levy and dad Eugene Levy addressing the elephant in the room.

That, of course, would be the fact that The Bear is considered…funny.

In my expert opinion, tonight’s Emmy awards find “The Bear” leading with an impressive 23 nominations, making it the most nominated comedy series ever. Now, while many might anticipate us to crack a joke about whether this exceptional show truly falls under the comedy genre, I must admit, it’s a tricky one. The depth and emotion portrayed in “The Bear” are truly remarkable, blurring the lines between genres. Yet, its unique blend of humor and seriousness makes it an unforgettable watch.

He added, “But, in the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes.”

Chef’s kiss, right?

Because while The Bear certainly has provided its share of laughs—Jeremy Allen White‘s Carmy and Ebon Moss-Bachrach‘s Richie swearing profusely at each other has a certain comedic poetry to it (and the actors have the respective Emmys for lead and supporting performances to prove it—but at the end of the long, hard, grease-and-sauce-smeared day, the FX show is heartbreaking. Approximately a quarter of the time, it’s heartwarming, but its 30-minute duration often finds it categorized as comedy rather than drama. Shows like the late, remarkable Succession (or The Crown or Shogun) have provided more laughs per minute than The Bear.

“Hannah Einbinder’s mom, original Saturday Night Live member Laraine Newman, didn’t hold back her emotions: After Liza Colón-Zayas, who portrays the self-assured sous-chef Tina, won the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series award against her daughter, Newman expressed on X: “I swear! The Bear!!!!! Exclamation marks repeated!

She initially expressed her opinion and then removed the sentiment, stating instead, “In my view, The Bear is an excellent series; however, I don’t classify it as a comedy—not even a dark one.

Likely, her first post didn’t sit well with quite a number of “The Bear” enthusiasts, who have collectively earned the show an impressive 21 Emmy awards in just its initial two seasons.

Regardless if you’re drawn by its sharp wit, kitchen tension, or Carmy’s expression of discomfort whenever he scrutinizes himself, The Bear continues to offer a smorgasbord of enjoyment.
