As a connoisseur of cinema who’s spent countless hours immersed in the dark and twisted realm of horror films, I must confess that Ariana Grande and Paul Mescal’s exchange regarding their favorite horror movies of the year has piqued my curiosity. While Mescal’s reluctance to watch such chilling masterpieces leaves me a tad puzzled, I can’t help but agree with Grande on her choices – Longlegs and Late Night with the Devil.
In the musical “Wicked”, Glinda is famed for her cheerful demeanor, but actress Ariana Grande adds a mysterious edge to her screen presence by delving into some chilling and unsettling films. Recently, she listed “Longlegs” and “Late Night with the Devil” among her top horror movies of the year. Grande isn’t alone in applauding these spine-tingling experiences, as “Longlegs” enjoys a 86% positive rating on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, while “Late Night with the Devil” boasts an impressive 97%. What makes Grande’s suggestions particularly thrilling for horror enthusiasts is that these indie productions captured her attention amidst major studio releases like “A Quiet Place: Day One”, “Alien: Romulus”, and “Smile 2”.
During a conversation with Paul Mescal for Variety’s Actors on Actors, Ariana Grande admitted that she enjoys watching a lot of horror films. In response, Mescal, who is known for Gladiator II, confessed his dislike for the genre, stating, “I just can’t bring myself to watch horror movies, not even for money. It’s impossible for me. I recently watched Longlegs… Goodness gracious, I just can’t handle it.
Without hesitation, Grande exclaimed, ‘Actually, Late Night with the Devil and that one were my top picks for horror this year! I highly recommend it. The acting alone is worth watching, let me tell you. It’s absolutely brilliant! Don’t you think Nicolas Cage’s role in there is a dream role? That’s quite enjoyable. That’s a fantastic watch!’
Mescal joked, “I’m gonna say yes, and it’s never gonna happen. He’s unbelievable in it.”

It’s astonishing that a movie as impactful as “Longlegs” originated from such a modest film studio like NEON, given its dominance over the summer horror genre. The enigmatic promotional strategy, focusing more on Maika Monroe’s character Lee Harker pursuing Longlegs rather than revealing too much of Nicolas Cage’s psychopath, added to the intrigue and drew crowds eager to catch a glimpse of the killer. However, it wasn’t just about the novelty; viewers and critics were captivated by the movie’s chilling ambiance and Osgood Perkins’ clever homages to horror films and serial killer motifs. Yet, what truly set “Longlegs” apart was its ability to offer a distinctive viewing experience.
Following its initial festival showings in 2023, IFC Film’s “Late Night with the Devil” didn’t officially release until this year. Its premiere on streaming service Shudder has since generated a strong following, making it notable. The film features David Dastmalchian as a late-night host who endeavors to boost his flagging ratings by performing a live exorcism in his studio. The positive buzz the movie garnered at festivals was further amplified when Stephen King tweeted about its merits, positioning it among the top-rated movies of 2024 across all genres.
Longlegs and Late Night with the Devil are both available now on home video.
