As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’m beyond excited to share that the chilling and legendary cosmos of “Event Horizon” is about to expand, nearly three decades after its initial terror gripped moviegoers in 1997. The beloved cult sci-fi horror masterpiece from Paramount is making a comeback, not on the big screen this time, but as an official comic book prequel series from IDW Publishing. Titled “Event Horizon: Dark Descent,” this five-part series is scheduled to debut its first issue in August, promising to unveil the tragic end of the original Event Horizon crew. As reported by Variety, this new comic journey will fully embrace the hard-R rating of its cinematic forerunner, delving deep into the terrifying realm that the unfortunate starship traversed.
For the comic book adaptation of “Event Horizon: Dark Descent“, a highly skilled creative team has been gathered together, demonstrating a strong dedication to accurately portraying the spine-tingling atmosphere of the movie. The series is being written by Christian Ward, who has won multiple Eisner Awards for his work on “Batman: City of Madness“, and features Tristan Jones, an accomplished sci-fi artist well-known for titles such as “Aliens: Defiance“. The up-and-coming colorist Pip Martin from “That Texas Blood” is also a part of the team. According to the publisher, the comic series will delve into the “cinematic universe of terror” created by director Paul W.S. Anderson and writer Philip Eisner.
It’s an immense honor to receive the reins for this cherished movie, one I don’t take lightly and have some truly thrilling plans for,” Ward shared. “Expect dramatic twists and turns that will alter your perspective on the film forever.” Jones chimed in, “I believe what Christian is bringing and contributing to the storyline will catch people off guard.” He continued, “It’s given me a lot of gruesome, tangible elements to work with visually, which I find exciting. Knowing that this collaboration directly involves the original film’s creative team ensures fans that this prequel will be a sincere and significant extension to the Event Horizon series.
The Lasting Appeal of Event Horizon
Revisiting the universe of the “Event Horizon” in comic book format highlights the lasting influence of the film and the devoted fanbase it has fostered throughout its existence. Initially released in 1997, Paul W.S. Anderson’s film featuring Laurence Fishburne (Dr. William Weir), Sam Neill (Captain Miller), Kathleen Quinlan (Peters), and Joely Richardson (Stark) was met with a divided critical response and unimpressive ticket sales. Despite being produced at an estimated $60 million, the movie only managed to gross $26.6 million globally. However, over the years, “Event Horizon” has experienced a marked resurgence in critical acclaim and is now regarded as one of the top horror films of the 1990s. It is often praised for its chilling combination of gothic horror, science fiction, and psychological terror, earning comparisons to Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” and Ridley Scott’s “Alien.” A spinoff television series has been in development since 2019, although progress on the project has been slow.
The first issue of “Event Horizon: Dark Descent #1” is set for release on August 20th. The main cover will be designed by Jeffrey Alan Love, with additional covers by Christian Ward, Martin Simmonds, and Joshua Hixson. There will also be a foil full art variant of Ward’s cover, as well as a sketch cover. This comic series falls under the IDW Dark Horror imprint, which is also working on comic book adaptations for other popular Paramount Pictures properties such as “A Quiet Place,” “Smile,” “The Twilight Zone,” and “Sleepy Hollow.
