Every Confirmed Star Wars Movie in Development (And When They Release)

As a lifelong Star Wars fan who’s seen more than my fair share of intergalactic shenanigans, I must say the future of this beloved franchise is looking quite promising! The galaxy far, far away seems to be buzzing with activity, and it’s exciting to see so many talented creators bringing their unique visions to the table.

On Thursday, there was news that Lucasfilm is planning a new Star Wars trilogy, leaving us wondering how this might impact the ongoing projects within the franchise. Previously, it was known that nine Star Wars films were in different stages of production, but the series has experienced significant changes throughout its history, making it difficult to predict which concepts will ultimately come to fruition and which ones may be abandoned. As we ponder about Star Wars: Episode X and future installments, let’s take a look at all the other tales Disney is developing, and their current statuses.

The Mandalorian & Grogu

Among the films listed here, only “The Mandalorian & Grogu” has a confirmed release date at the moment – it’s set to premiere on May 22, 2026. This movie is directed and co-written by Jon Favreau, who collaborated with Dave Filoni on the script. Filming started back in August of this year and was recently completed last month.

The continuation of the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian” is set to premiere in cinemas instead. The main characters will be Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, the Mandalorian bounty hunter, and his companion Grogu, also known as Baby Yoda or The Child. It’s been confirmed that Sigourney Weaver has joined the cast for an undisclosed role, and Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios from Star Wars Rebels is set to appear in this summer’s release.

Although we’re quite familiar with this project, it still holds many unknowns. Nevertheless, given that the film has already been produced, it’s expected to be released, allowing us to uncover the secrets ourselves. During our journey, we might also stumble upon clues about other movies, particularly when it comes to the upcoming focus of the franchise.

Lando

As of now, we’re aware that a follow-up to “Solo: A Star Wars Story” titled “Lando” is currently being developed. Initially planned as a streaming series, the project was later changed into a theatrical film slated for release in September 2023. According to Variety, Donald Glover will once again embody a younger Lando Calrissian and collaborate with his brother Stephen on the screenplay. However, details about its progress or potential release date are not yet available.

A Droid Story

The movie “A Droid Story”, found on this list, is predicted to bypass traditional theaters and head directly to streaming platforms like Disney+. It’s an animated tale focusing on R2D2 and C-3P0, but since the last update from Lucasfilm in December 2020, there’s no assurance that it’s still moving forward.

Rogue Squadron

Besides “Rogue Squadron,” another film with a title yet is underway, serving as a sequel to “Rogue One.” Written by Matthew Robinson and directed by Patty Jenkins, it initially was planned as an anthology movie. However, according to “The Hollywood Reporter,” there might be alterations before its debut. In April 2023, executive Kathleen Kennedy hinted at the possibility of transforming this project into a television series. The most recent update came in March 2024 when Jenkins disclosed that the script was still being developed, suggesting it may take some time before we can watch it.

Rey’s New Jedi Order Movie

We got an update just last month on the movie sometimes referred to as New Jedi Order and sometimes as “the Rey movie.” This would be set after the sequel trilogy and follow Rey (Daisy Ridley) as she tried to rebuild the Jedi after the collapse of the First Order. Little is known about this part of the official timeline so far, though the Star Wars Legends canon has covered this part of the story extensively.

The production of this film has experienced some significant changes. Initially, Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were assigned to write it; however, they were subsequently replaced by Steven Knight. As per recent reports from Deadline, Knight recently departed the project, but no replacement has been announced as yet. Despite this change, director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy remains involved. Director Ridley Scott has not yet reviewed the script, but he’s been briefed on various plot details, such as Rey supposedly not having her own children and instead focusing on founding a new Jedi Academy.

Taika Waititi’s Untitled Movie

Renowned director Taika Waititi has been developing a Star Wars film since May 2020, yet details about its storyline remain scarce. Joining forces with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, they are penning the screenplay, and as of now, no other cast or crew members have been revealed. Back in May 2022, it was suggested that this could be the next film to go into production, but that didn’t materialize. Instead, Variety reported last April that Waititi is still working on the script, with a production timeline yet to be determined.

James Mangold’s Untitled Movie

Filmmaker James Mangold has been assigned to develop a project set millennia ago, in a distant galaxy. His film is rumored to be based in an ancient era called “The Dawn of the Jedi.” This period of time was scarcely explored in a 15-issue comic book series and one accompanying novel, all published between 2012 and 2014. Although these are now part of the ‘Legends’ continuity, Mangold shared with The Hollywood Reporter that the timeline will remain consistent for this project. This means the movie will unfold approximately 25,000 years before the events depicted in “A New Hope.

According to reports, Mangold is teaming up with Beau Willimon, known for his work on Andor, to write a movie. Mangold has described the plot as being similar to a biblical epic, such as The Ten Commandments, but instead focusing on the origins of the Force – when it first appeared, how we discovered it, and how we learned to harness its power. At this point, there’s no announced release date, and it remains unclear whether the project has moved beyond scriptwriting and development stages.

Dave Filoni’s Untitled Movie

Dave Filoni, both writer and director, agreed to work on a film set in the High Republic era just a few months before Lucasfilm announced his new role as Chief Creative Officer. The movie is expected to conclude many tales that take place between the original and sequel trilogies. At this point, the project is still in development, suggesting it might be some time before it’s finished. This could indicate that other spin-offs will also soon come to an end.

Shawn Levy’s Untitled Movie

Now, Shawn Levy, the filmmaker, is rumored to be delving into his secretive Star Wars-like project, though specifics remain elusive. Previously, Levy mentioned that upon completing Deadpool & Wolverine and Stranger Things Season 5, he would embark on this new venture. In September of 2023, he shared with Collider that he’d start once the Hollywood labor strikes concluded. However, since then, there has been no further news about his progress.
