Every Game of Thrones Project We’ll See Before House of the Dragon Season 3

As a seasoned gamer with decades of binge-watching and immersive storytelling under my belt, I can confidently say that the Game of Thrones universe has proven to be a veritable treasure trove for fantasy enthusiasts like myself. The anticipation and wait for new installments have become as much a part of the experience as the series themselves.

Beginning in 2011, “Game of Thrones” soared to become the most-watched television series globally. Its offshoot, “House of the Dragon,” which premiered in 2022, came close and even set a record as HBO’s most-watched premiere ever, with almost 10 million viewers. The popularity of George R.R. Martin’s universe is evident, making it no shock that more spinoffs are on the horizon. Yet, the hardest aspect for fans is the waiting game. With “House of the Dragon” not due back for its third season until 2026, fans eagerly anticipate other spinoffs to bridge the gap.

In 2025, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is set to air on TV, and it seems a movie adaptation may be in the works as well. Additionally, other projects have been hinted at, but given that major projects have been confirmed, only a select few may premiere before the continuation of “House of the Dragon.” So, what are these potential projects, and what can we anticipate?

Upcoming Projects in the Game of Thrones Universe

Prior to the upcoming season of “House of the Dragon,” a new story titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is set to debut, delving into Westeros lore. Unlike previous series, this one will feature fewer episodes and a unique, distinct tone. The narrative is inspired by the “Tales of Dunk and Egg” saga, taking place approximately 90 years before the happenings of “Game of Thrones,”, but following closely after the events of “House of the Dragon“. The series chronicles the exploits of Ser Duncan the Tall, who would later become a renowned member of the Royal Guard, and his relationship with his squire, Egg.

This production has Martin serving as an executive producer, alongside Ira Parker managing the scripts. Following its completion, the author expressed high praise for the project, contrasting it with House of the Dragon, where he criticized certain changes. The series is set to debut somewhere between summer and fall of 2025.

As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to confirm the news of an upcoming “Game of Thrones” movie! Although the director and screenwriter haven’t been officially announced yet, HBO and Max CEO Casey Bloys hinted during a 2025 production preview event in November that it’s in the works alongside Warner Bros. Unfortunately, details about the plot remain under wraps for now.

He mentioned that they will come up with an idea, which they’ll evaluate for quality. They’ll go through the scripts together to ensure it’s engaging. He finds it potentially enjoyable and intriguing. Essentially, the aim is to determine if there’s a story worth presenting on the big screen and creating a grand spectacle. He seemed excited about the prospect.

Ever since Game of Thrones first premiered, I’ve been eagerly waiting for the announcement of a feature film. Back then, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss hinted that they intended to wrap up the story with a trilogy. In 2014, even George R.R. Martin himself confirmed that talks were underway to bring it to life. Now, it’s official, and fans can’t help but speculate about the upcoming movie. Fueling our excitement even more is the recent news of a meeting between Martin and Maisie Williams, who played Arya Stark. This has only served to stir up more theories and heighten our anticipation.

Announced Projects in the Game of Thrones Universe

In the realm of “Game of Thrones,” the Targaryen family is a significant powerhouse, having ruled over the Iron Throne for quite some time. It wouldn’t be unexpected but would certainly thrill fans if a spin-off focusing on their arrival in Westeros were to materialize. This concept is actually being worked on. Known as “Aegon’s Conquest,” this prequel to “House of the Dragon” will narrate the tale of Aegon Targaryen, accompanied by his sisters/wives Rhaenys and Visenya, as they make their entry with their dragons, claim territory, and ultimately unite the Seven Kingdoms before the events depicted in “House of the Dragon.

Mattson Tomlin, renowned for his work on Matt Reeves’ “Batman” and its upcoming sequel, is the creator and writer of a new prequel series he’s working on. He shared that he frequently consults with Martin (presumably a reference to Martin Scorsese) and that the narrative draws inspiration from historical figures like Napoleon Bonaparte and Alexander the Great. The project was unveiled in April 2023, but an official release date hasn’t been set as of yet.

However, it’s important to note that the universe of “Game of Thrones” isn’t solely focused on the Targaryens. A revived series this year, initially canceled and then resurrected, is called “10,000 Ships.” This prequel story takes place approximately a thousand years before the original series and focuses on Princess Nymeria, the founder of Dorne, who is an ancestor of House Martell. Nymeria led her army in ten thousand ships to Essos, eventually commanding them to be burned to eliminate any desire for retreat. Yet, no release date has been revealed as of now.

The world created by ‘Game of Thrones’ is renowned for its intricacy, providing a vast landscape ripe for numerous spin-offs. Some ventures are already underway and others are still up in the air, but one certainty remains: should the fanbase maintain its strength, it could very easily evolve into something revolutionary, offering countless tales to be unveiled for future generations.

Both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are now streaming on Max.
