In the main DC Universe, Wonder Woman, or Diana, has frequently stood as a protector for the Greek gods. Although deities like Ares, Hecate, and Apollo have been foes to Diana, generally speaking, the Greek pantheon has been her most significant source of power. However, in the Absolute Universe, Zeus and many other prominent male members of the pantheon are adversaries to Diana. For instance, they’ve kept Diana’s sisters captive for eternity, making her “The Last Amazon.” Despite the male gods being portrayed as ruthless, the female gods are subtly working towards helping Diana overcome them and restore balance to the universe. So far, only four Greek gods and goddesses have shown up in this highly-praised series; however, more have been hinted at and will likely appear soon. As events unfold, the conflict between the male and female members of the Greek pantheon, centered around Diana, is escalating.
In the comic book series “Absolute Wonder Woman“, the Greek deities, whether friends or foes, are offering captivating and original interpretations of Greek mythology.
1) Apollo
In the Absolute Universe’s Greek mythology, Apollo, the Sun God, is introduced through flashbacks, setting the stage for the Greek pantheon’s role in Wonder Woman’s narrative. According to Zeus, Apollo exiled Diana, a newborn Amazon, to Hell as retribution for the Amazons’ offenses against the gods. The nature of these transgressions is yet unknown, but they led to Diana being raised by the sorceress Circe on the Island of Hell. To keep Diana unaware of her Amazon lineage, Apollo cast a spell on Circe, prohibiting her from uttering the word “Amazon.” However, Diana eventually uncovers her Amazonian roots by delving into her subconscious and subsequently escapes to the mortal world. In this new realm, she becomes a champion for humanity while simultaneously seeking her lost sisters. So far in the Absolute Wonder Woman comics, Apollo has not reappeared, but his initial introduction sets the Greek gods as adversaries for Wonder Woman.
2) Hecate
In an alternate cosmos known as the Absolute Universe, adversaries from the primary universe transform into steadfast allies. In the main timeline, Hecate, a goddess of malevolence and cruelty, has repeatedly attempted to harm Diana. Yet, given that this version of Diana learned sorcery under Circe’s guidance, it comes as no surprise that she regarded Hecate, the Goddess of Witchcraft, as a source of power. It was Hecate who enlightened Circe about the plot orchestrated by the Greek goddesses to exploit Diana for dominance over the male deities. After battling hordes of monsters and becoming severely weakened, modern-day Diana sought help from her divine patroness, Hecate. Granted, Hecate restored Diana’s strength and mystical prosthetic arm, enabling her to prepare for battle once more. In the primary universe, they might be enemies, but in the Absolute Universe, Diana stands as Hecate’s chosen warrior.
3) Hades
As a movie buff with a penchant for Greek mythology, I find myself captivated by the story of Wonder Woman, who was banished to the Underworld by Apollo. This sets me on a collision course with none other than Hades, the deity I must confront as part of my quest to protect humanity and rejoin my Amazon kin in the mortal world.
When I managed to break free from the clutches of Hades’ domain, it sent the King of the Underworld into an uncontrollable rage. After all, he doesn’t take kindly to trespassers! As one of the mighty trio in the Greek pantheon, Hades is a powerful and arrogant god who revels in his cruelty.
He kept my mother, Circe, imprisoned, shackled and helpless. If I wanted to rescue her, he demanded that I entertain him by battling the fearsome Chimera. And so, with determination burning within me, I accepted the challenge and entered Hades’ arena. The battle was fierce and grueling, but eventually, I emerged victorious over the Chimera.
However, true to form, Hades reneged on his promise and instead presented me with another seemingly insurmountable task. He hoped this challenge would force me to choose between remaining in the Underworld for eternity or leaving, but never being able to see my mother again. But as Athena had done before, another female goddess, Persephone – Hades’ wife – came to my aid and helped me escape his cruel torment.
4) Persephone
In simpler terms, Persephone – the deity who embodies Spring and rules the Underworld – is a compassionate being who isn’t afraid to stand up against her husband, Hades, if she feels it’s necessary. As a child, Diana frequently encountered Persephone in her dreams. The goddess explained that she was compelled to marry Hades and spend six months each year in the Underworld due to a trick involving pomegranate seeds. She gave young Diana a solitary pomegranate seed, telling her to keep it as a means of visiting the Underworld for one month annually. This gift from Persephone becomes essential when Hades presents Diana with her second challenge following her initial victory over the Chimera.
In this contest, Hades tries to compel Diana into a dilemma: she must pick between two doors; one guarantees death, while the other sends her to the human realm, from which she can never return to the Underworld to see her mother Circe. However, with the pomegranate seed given by Persephone earlier, Diana found an alternative solution. She managed to leave the Underworld for the mortal world, yet could still visit her mother annually for a month. Infuriated that he was outsmarted, Hades and his wife plot revenge against Diana. This may be the first deity she has vanquished, but it won’t be the last.
