As a long-time comic book enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a tinge of melancholy as I reflect on Sony’s Spider-Man universe. The journey these characters embarked on was nothing short of spectacular, and it’s always bittersweet when a good story comes to an end.

Over the past 22 years since the initial release of Spider-Man, Sony’s management of the film rights has had its fair share of highs and lows. However, it seems we’ve reached the lowest point now, as Sony has ceased production on any further Spider-Man universe movies. Despite this, the actual Spider-Man films, including those featuring Tom Holland and produced jointly with Marvel Studios, as well as the Spider-Verse series, will continue. The rest of the projects, unfortunately, have been wrapped up. This move is understandable considering the less successful titles like Morbius and Madame Web that defined this cinematic universe. Even the Venom trilogy, which started off promisingly, has fallen short of expectations.

The much-anticipated film starring Kraven the Hunter, set to release on December 13th, marks the conclusion of Sony’s Spider-Man series, bringing an end to a period that has been less than impressive in terms of quality for fans. Despite the jokes and criticism from fans over the years, this farewell is still somewhat disheartening. There are beloved characters within the Sony Spider-Man universe whose stories were not given the justice they deserved, and their potential disappearance leaves a void within the fan community – although it’s more of a dedicated following than legions. For now, we can only hope that these characters will make a comeback in the future.

Although many characters introduced in these movies have not appeared elsewhere, this is particularly regrettable when it comes to Michael Keaton’s character, the Vulture. The Vulture was a complex character; he was attempting to provide for his family and business, yet he was still chilling. This multi-faceted antagonist would have been an excellent addition to other MCU films.

The villainous character Vulture was hinted at in the closing scene of Morbius, foreshadowing the long-anticipated Sinister Six film. However, it seems that project will not materialize. Vulture’s charm and depth made fans eager for more of his narrative. There’s a possibility he could show up in upcoming films like Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, but as of now, his storyline has concluded.

With numerous issues plaguing the movie, it’s challenging to discuss them all, but one aspect of Madame Web that was worthy of salvation is Sydney Sweeney’s portrayal of Julia Carpenter.

One key aspect that stood out was how well Sweeney embodied the Spider-Woman character in her costume, resembling the comic version quite closely. Yet, it wasn’t just her appearance that left us wanting more; it was her untapped potential as Julia Carpenter from the comics. In the source material, Carpenter was the second Spider-Woman, acquiring her powers through an experiment by the Commission. Her unique blend of physical abilities such as super strength, agility, stamina, and speed, alongside psychic powers like weaving mental webs, distinguished her from other Spider-Women. Notably, Carpenter served as a full-time Avenger before Spider-Man, being part of the Avengers West Coast while Spider-Man was still an associate member.

Carnage Is One of Spider-Man’s Most Popular Foes and Could Have Gone Further in the Films

Cletus Kasady emerged in the shadow of Venom’s fame, a second symbiotic antagonist who amplified the charm of his predecessor to the maximum level. Carnage embodies an unprecedented level of violence and malice that made him the ideal villain for the gritty ’90s era. Over time, he has grown to be one of Marvel’s most beloved villains among both casual fans and dedicated comic book readers alike. He has headlined significant storylines, as well as numerous miniseries and ongoing series, and his name carries weight even in the circles where the nuances of comics are not always fully understood.

Selecting Woody Harrelson for the role of Carnage in “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” was an excellent decision. The outcome of Carnage at the end of “Let There Be Carnage” was left unclear, leaving room for a sequel. This is fitting for Carnage, given the character’s chilling history of coming back from the dead. Fans would have been thrilled for another opportunity to watch Harrelson as Carnage. Unfortunately, there are still many Carnage stories that could be told, and it’s regrettable that they probably won’t now.

Knull Didn’t Even Get a Chance to Shine

In the Sony Spider-Man cinematic realm, “Venom” initially brought a ray of hope due to its blockbuster status, leading to a trilogy of Venom films. The last installment – “Venom: The Last Dance” – introduced an influential character in the Marvel Universe symbiote lore: Knull. Known as the deity of the Klyntar, the symbiotes’ species, Knull transformed into a formidable adversary, headlining the massive crossover event called “King in Black.

The conclusion of Sony’s Spider-Man universe means no more development for those characters. Knull is an impressive new Marvel villain from the last decade who could have been a powerful antagonist on the big screen. However, his potential was not fully realized, as he barely made an appearance for general audiences. It’s unlikely that Sony will allow Knull to be used in the MCU, given the tiny chances of that happening.

In truth, it’s more accurate to say that Venom belongs to a distinct part of the Spider-Man universe, as he boasts his own lineage of symbiote-clad characters. Venom is a significant figure in the Marvel Comics pantheon, and the release of films featuring him was highly anticipated.

The “Venom” trilogy – consisting of “Venom”, “Venom: Let There Be Carnage”, and hypothetically “Venom: The Last Dance” – offered a fresh take on the character Venom, deviating from his portrayal in the comics. In these films, the dynamic between Eddie Brock and his symbiote was a significant aspect, often resembling squabbling lovers. Despite the fact that each film seemed to have decreasing appeal, this version of Venom has become a fan favorite, and not having them back on screen is a source of sadness for many.
