For over a decade since his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Matt Murdock has been careful to maintain his secret dual life as both a blind lawyer during the day and the masked vigilante, Daredevil, at night. As a crucial character in the gritty street-level narratives of the MCU, Daredevil is one of the heroes who continues to prioritize his anonymity, as many adversaries seek to harm those dear to him. However, despite his best efforts, there are individuals who have managed to uncover his secret identity.
In various shows like Daredevil, The Defenders, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Daredevil: Born Again, many have uncovered Matt Murdock’s hidden persona. Notably, Daredevil: Born Again served as a reboot of his original Marvel Television series, reuniting Charlie Cox’s Man Without Fear with Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, now the Mayor of New York City. As Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 approaches, more characters might soon discover Murdock’s secret identity, joining an array of Marvel Cinematic Universe personalities who have already unveiled it.
15) Stick
In Netflix’s series Daredevil, Stick (played by Scott Glenn) initially appeared as Matt Murdock’s mentor when he was young. Later on, it was disclosed that Stick belonged to the Chaste, an ancient group that had been at odds with the Hand. He taught Matt how to leverage his blindness and heightened senses to become a powerful fighter, ultimately shaping him into Hell’s Kitchen’s Devil. Given that he was there from the beginning, Stick was the initial person to learn about Matt Murdock’s vigilante activities, taking on a paternal role for the young boy – although he didn’t necessarily want to do so.
14) Elektra Natchios
In another instance, Elektra Natchios (Élodie Yung), one of Stick’s protégés, encountered Matt Murdock during his college days, having been assigned by Stick to reconnect with him within the Chaste organization. Over time, Elektra developed a deep romantic relationship with Murdock that continued into maturity. Though Murdock didn’t openly disclose his identity as Daredevil to her, it wasn’t difficult for Elektra to deduce that Matt Murdock was the man beneath the mask of Hell’s Kitchen’s Devil. This suspicion arose from years of observing him in action and appreciating his concealed ferocity and martial arts prowess.
13) Father Lantom & Sister Maggie
Following the fatal encounter with Roscoe Sweeney that claimed his father’s life, Matt Murdock found himself residing at Saint Agnes Orphanage, nestled beside Clinton Church in Hell’s Kitchen. It was here where he crossed paths with Father Paul Lantom (Peter McRobbie) and Sister Maggie Grace (Joanne Whalley). Throughout the events of Daredevil Season 1, Lantom unraveled Murdock’s hidden identity during their confessional conversations. In Season 3, it was revealed that Sister Maggie Grace was actually Matt’s mother, who played a crucial part in helping her son reclaim his vigilante persona as Daredevil. Both Lantom and Grace significantly contributed to shaping Murdock into the virtuous, righteous, and morally upright Daredevil we know today.
12) Claire Temple
Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson), a key character linking the Defenders Saga shows, was present as an ally for each of the Defenders, helping to establish their team in their 2017 miniseries. In essence, she embodied Marvel Comics’ Night Nurse character, offering medical aid to various superheroes. She discovered Daredevil’s civilian identity early on in ‘Daredevil’ Season 1 and has since provided numerous healing services for Matt Murdock. Many are eager for Dawson to return to the role in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’.
11) Kidnapped Boy
In the second episode of “Daredevil” Season 1, titled “Cut Man,” Matt Murdock stepped into action to rescue a kidnapped young boy from the Russian mafia, headed by Vladimir and Anatoly Ranskahov (played by Nikolai Nikolaeff and Gideon Emery). Following the famous single-take hallway fight sequence, Matt Murdock removed his mask, revealing his face to the child. Although the boy had never encountered Matt Murdock before, since he had previously seen Matt’s face, there was a chance that he might be able to figure out Daredevil’s actual identity.
10) Franklin “Foggy” Nelson
At university, Franklin “Foggy” Nelson crossed paths with Matt Murdock. Upon graduation, they started a law firm together. Throughout their friendship, Matt hid his combat abilities and true self from Foggy. This secret came to light when Foggy found an injured Matt, who had just fought Nobu. The revelation of Matt’s double life as Daredevil caused tension between them, which culminated in Foggy accepting Matt’s secret identity. Tragically, this acceptance led to Foggy’s downfall at the start of “Daredevil: Born Again”.
9) Madame Gao
In the popular Netflix series “Daredevil,” Madame Gao (Wai Ching Ho) emerged as one of the enigmatic characters, later confirmed as a top leader in the organization known as The Hand. Her business involved the illicit heroin trade in New York City, making her a high-profile adversary for Daredevil. Interestingly, she seemed to have deduced that Daredevil was actually Matt Murdock, though the specifics of how she arrived at this conclusion remain undisclosed. Although it’s assumed that Gao is deceased, as no body has been found, there’s a chance she could resurface to confront Daredevil once more.
8) Frank Castle’s Punisher
In a similar fashion to Madame Gao, it’s not explicitly shown when Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) figured out that Matt Murdock is Daredevil. However, in Daredevil Season 2, Castle, as the Punisher, developed a complex relationship with Daredevil, often serving as both friend and foe. Both characters shared a common goal but approached it in contrasting ways. Matt Murdock eventually represented Castle in court. It’s plausible that Castle may have witnessed Murdock fighting the Hand in Season 2’s finale, though this wasn’t explicitly confirmed until their reunion in Daredevil: Born Again. This encounter could set the stage for their ongoing partnership in Born Again Season 2 and the Punisher’s standalone Special Presentation.
7) Karen Page
Among Foggy Nelson and Karen Page (played by Deborah Ann Woll), Karen is one of Matt Murdock’s dearest confidants, making it surprising that he didn’t tell her sooner about his identity as Daredevil. Throughout various seasons, Daredevil rescued Karen multiple times, but it wasn’t until the finale of Season 2 that she discovered his true self. Upon hearing this revelation, Karen felt a mix of terror, intrigue, and mostly anger towards Matt for keeping such a significant secret from her for months. In the upcoming season 2 of “Daredevil: Born Again,” Karen will play a more substantial role alongside Matt Murdock.
6) The Defenders
2017 marked my personal favorite moment when the Defenders Saga’s individual superheroes united in “The Defenders” miniseries to confront Alexandra Reid (Sigourney Weaver), the Hand’s leader, with the ultimate goal of dismantling this ancient organization for good. To gain trust among my teammates, I, Matt Murdock, chose to reveal my identity to Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Danny Rand (Finn Jones), and Luke Cage (Mike Colter). As we move forward, it’s exciting to see that Jessica Jones is set to reappear in “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 2, where her witty banter with me promises a delightful friendship. However, as of now, it remains uncertain if Danny Rand and Luke Cage will rejoin us for the next chapter.
5) Wilson Fisk’s Kingpin
As a movie enthusiast, it’s been quite some time for Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, to uncover the true identity of his arch-nemesis. But when I finally pieced together that the man hidden behind Daredevil’s mask is Matt Murdock, it brought danger to my closest allies. The two reached an uneasy ceasefire at the end of Daredevil Season 3, but that fragile truce was shattered by Vanessa Fisk, paving the way for Daredevil: Born Again. With Kingpin now serving as the Mayor of New York and still aware of Daredevil’s secret identity, there’s no question that Fisk will continue to be a formidable and terrifying adversary to Murdock in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s forthcoming storylines.
4) Ray Nadeem
In the third season of “Daredevil”, FBI Agent Ray Nadeem (played by Jay Ali) was unfortunately used by Kingpin for his release from prison, a process that unfolded gradually. Daredevil unmasked himself before Nadeem to build trust and encourage him to testify against Kingpin and the FBI. However, this led to Nadeem’s demise at the hands of Bullseye and Vanessa Fisk. His dying declaration, which implicated Fisk, was crucial in Matt Murdock’s efforts to imprison Fisk. Regrettably, these actions proved futile in the end.
3) Benjamin Poindexter’s Bullseye
It’s highly probable that Benjamin Poindexter discovered Matt Murdock’s secret identity as Daredevil while he was under the control of Wilson Fisk, also known as the Kingpin. Although we didn’t see this revelation on-screen, it’s clear from Poindexter’s attacks at locations close to Murdock and his associates that he may have figured it out. Even though it hasn’t been explicitly stated whether Poindexter knows Daredevil’s identity, the clues suggest strongly that he does, particularly considering their interaction in Season 1 and their reunion in pictures from Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.
2) Jennifer Walters’ She-Hulk
2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home saw Charlie Cox make a brief appearance as Matt Murdock, but it was the 2022 Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law that brought Daredevil back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this series set in Los Angeles, Daredevil (Cox) teamed up with Jennifer Walters’ She-Hulk (Tatiana Maslany) to rescue their costume designer, Luke Jacobson (Griffin Matthews), from Leapfrog (Brandon Stanley). This partnership sparked a romantic and sexual connection between them. Moreover, Matt Murdock was introduced to Walters’ family, including Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner (the Hulk) and his son Skaar (Wil Deusner), allowing the Hulk family to learn that Daredevil is none other than Matt Murdock.
1) Cherry
In the Netflix series “Daredevil: Born Again,” Cherry (played by Clark Johnson), who was initially considered underutilized, was a character carried over from the show prior to its reboot. In the first episode of “Born Again,” Cherry discovered Matt Murdock weeping on the roof of Josie’s bar after Foggy Nelson’s death. This encounter enabled him to learn that Murdock is Daredevil. It would be exciting to expand Cherry’s role in Season 2 of “Born Again” since he forms part of Daredevil’s team, assembled to confront Kingpin and the Anti-Vigilante Task Force in their ongoing battle.
