One day after his arrest and subsequent release on a $25,000 bond, representatives for his wife Nikki Garcia, with whom he shares a 4-year-old son named Matteo, have requested privacy regarding the matter. Former “Dancing With the Stars” pro Cheryl Burke also expressed her shock over the news and expressed concern for everyone involved, as Chigvintsev was once considered family to her.
Henry Wofford, Napa County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer, told NBC News they wouldn’t disclose the identity, gender, age, or connection to Chigvintsev, the alleged victim’s location where the arrest occurred, due to their wish for privacy. However, he shed light on what prompted the arrest. He explained that a felony domestic violence charge is typically issued when there is visible injury or a credible eyewitness account. In this case, Wofford stated to TopMob News that the deputies felt confident making the arrest due to these factors. He also mentioned that additional evidence could potentially change the charge from a felony to a misdemeanor at a later time, but at the moment of the arrest, they believed it was appropriate to file a felony charge instead of a lesser one.
According to audio from TMZ, a dispatcher reports that Chigvintsev phoned 911 following a dispute where it’s claimed shoes were hurled at him. Later on in the call, the 42-year-old stated that medical assistance was no longer necessary.

Artem Chigvintsev was apprehended around 10 a.m. on August 29, as confirmed by Henry Wofford, the Public Information Officer of Napa County Sheriff’s Office, to TopMob News. Wofford mentioned that Chigvintsev, known for his work on Dancing With the Stars, did not resist and was subsequently transferred to the Napa County Department of Corrections. According to online records, he was detained on a charge of felony domestic violence with a bail bond set at $25,000.
I, a devoted admirer of the esteemed dance artist, was overjoyed to learn that they regained their freedom after posting bail at 2:18 p.m. on August 29th, as confirmed by Wofford to TopMob News. However, as of now, the specific date for our court appearance remains undisclosed.
In response to inquiries from NBC News, Wofford confirmed that Chigvintsev was taken into custody in Yountville, California. However, due to a request for privacy from the alleged victim, the exact location and identifying details of the individual were not disclosed. Wofford also discussed the circumstances surrounding the arrest with TopMob News. He explained that the deputies felt confident in charging Chigvintsev with felony domestic violence due to either visible injuries or credible witness accounts. However, he added that this could change as more evidence is gathered. Furthermore, Wofford emphasized the importance of respecting victims’ wishes for privacy, noting that they may not feel comfortable sharing all details immediately after the arrest, often due to feelings of embarrassment, threat, or fear of family impact. He stressed the need to provide victims with ample time and support to help them understand that assistance is available.
According to an audio clip released by TMZ on August 30th, Chigvintsev initially phoned 911 seeking medical assistance following a dispute where shoes were supposedly thrown at him. However, the dispatcher later reported that he no longer required medical attention. Nevertheless, Wofford confirmed that authorities still carried out an inspection. As Wofford explained to Page Six, “Even if someone on the phone says, ‘You don’t need to come anymore,’ we still conduct a welfare check for potential domestic violence cases. We won’t just halt our investigation.”

In the span of just over three weeks before the start of Dancing With the Stars season 33, Chigvintsev was taken into custody. Interestingly, despite his history with the show—having starred in a total of 12 seasons—he wasn’t scheduled to participate in this season’s lineup, according to Page Six and Variety. As of yet, ABC has not responded to our request for comment from TopMob News.
A representative for Nikki Garcia, who first met Artem Chigvintsev during their time together on Dancing With the Stars season 25 in 2017, issued a statement about his arrest following his release on August 30th. The rep requested privacy for Nikki and her family amid this personal matter.
Following the arrest of Chigvintsev, Cheryl Burke, a former professional dancer on Dancing With the Stars who left the show in 2022 after 26 seasons, expressed her sentiments about the situation.
