Hello once more, Sidney! Following Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott taking a break from the 2023 “Scream VI,” the initial Scream protagonist is set to reappear in “Scream 7.” This return also includes Courteney Cox and series creator Kevin Williamson, along with some familiar and new characters. With production on the sequel now commenced, let’s delve into what we currently know about “Scream 7,” including cast updates, directorial choices, and more.
Who’s in the Scream 7 Cast?
In the upcoming film “Scream 5”, we see Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers, played by Campbell and Cox respectively, reappearing on screen for the first time since Dewey’s (David Arquette) demise in 2022. Notably, Cox’s character, who became a fame-hungry reporter turned author of “The Woodsboro Murders”, will return in “Scream VI”, while Campbell chose not to participate in the sixth movie due to a disagreement over pay.
In 2022, Campbell expressed to People that the proposition extended to her didn’t seem proportionate to the worth she has contributed to the franchise over 25 years. As a woman in this industry, she emphasized the significance of being recognized and advocating for that recognition.
In the latest update regarding ‘Scream 3’ actors Sidney, portrayed by Gale, and her husband Mark, aka Patrick Dempsey, it was revealed that she was moving her family to safety due to recent Ghostface killings in New York. Gale also mentioned that after years of terror, Sidney deserves a happy ending. However, given that this is the sixth sequel in the ongoing slasher series, Sidney’s ‘happy ending’ isn’t likely to last for long. Actress Isabel May, known for her roles in ‘Yellowstone’ spinoffs ‘1883’ and ‘1923’, has been cast as Sidney’s daughter. Patrick Dempsey himself has confirmed that he has discussed returning to his role as Mark Kincaid for the first time since 2000’s ‘Scream 3’. (Studio Spyglass Entertainment has not officially announced Dempsey’s casting.)
Actors Mckenna Grace (from “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”), Celeste O’Connor (“Madame Web”), Asa Germann (“Gen V”), Sam Rechner (“Heartbreak High”), and Anna Camp (“Pitch Perfect”) have landed roles in upcoming projects, although their specific parts haven’t been revealed yet. In a twist for the “Scream” series, only Mason Gooding, who played Chad in the last two films, will reprise his role in “Scream 7”. The original “Core Four” group is now down to one member.
Roger L. Jackson, who has been the voice behind Ghostface since the original 1996 film, once again joined the cast alongside Campbell and Cox for the latest installment. However, Sam Carpenter, played by Barrera, the daughter of Sidney’s ex and the initial Ghostface, serial killer Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich), along with her half-sister Tara (Ortega) and Chad’s twin sister Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown), will not be featured in Scream 7.
In November 2023, Barrera got dismissed from Spyglass Media Group following her social media posts concerning the Israel-Hamas conflict. At the same time, it became known that Ortega wouldn’t be coming back, apparently due to scheduling issues with her popular Netflix show Wednesday. Later reports suggested that Ortega left because of a reported disagreement over pay.
Who wrote and directed Scream 7?
The creator of the series, Kevin Williamson, who penned the horror films “Scream,” “Scream 2,” and “Scream 4” under Wes Craven’s direction, is now directing “Scream 5” and “Scream 6,” with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (also known as Radio Silence) stepping aside to direct the vampire horror-comedy “Abigail.” Since then, Spyglass Media Group appointed Christopher Landon, director of “Happy Death Day” and “Freaky,” to take charge. However, in December 2023, Landon announced that he had left the sequel project a few weeks before his departure was made public by the media.
Landon expressed on social media that what started as an ideal job turned into a horrific situation, and his heart went out to everyone involved. He had earlier stated that Barrera’s dismissal from the Scream series wasn’t something he decided.
Landon concluded his post by stating, ‘It’s now time for us to move forward.’ He has nothing further to contribute to this discussion. However, he expresses his hope that Wes Craven’s legacy will continue to flourish and rise above the turmoil of our divided world. The work that Wes and Kevin did together is truly remarkable, and Landon felt privileged to have shared, if only for a moment, in their brilliance.
It emerged that James Vanderbilt, who wrote the scripts for Scream 5 and 6, had planned the seventh movie around Sam Barrera’s character but was compelled to revise his work. Later, Spyglass Media Group invited Guy Busick, who collaborated with Vanderbilt on the previous films, to rewrite. Busick is now credited as the screenwriter, while Vanderbilt gets a co-story credit. Notably, Busick has credits for Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett’s Ready or Not, Abigail, and the upcoming Final Destination: Bloodlines. Williamson, on the other hand, has only one directorial credit under his belt – the 1999 teen comedy-thriller Teaching Mrs. Tingle.
Williamson expressed that it has been almost three decades since his initial script for the movie “Scream” was directed by the iconic Wes Craven. He never would have imagined how successful it would become, or that he would be directing the seventh film in the series. Overwhelmed with gratitude and anticipation, he’s eager to embark on this adventure alongside Neve Campbell and the entire “Scream” crew as they bring back Sidney Prescott for the next installment of the “Scream” franchise.
Neve Campbell expressed her excitement and honor on social media about reprising her role as Sidney in the “Scream” movies, saying that her affection for these films has remained constant over the years. She’s delighted to have been asked to return to the screen as Sidney, and she couldn’t be more thrilled.
In addition, Campbell shared that she’s long envisioned making a “Scream” movie with Kevin Williamson at the helm. Now, her dream has come true – Kevin Williamson will direct “Scream 7”! The original creator of this franchise and the mind behind its conception, Kevin is not only an inspiration as an artist but also a cherished friend for many years. To the dedicated “Scream” fans, she hopes they are as excited as she is.
What is Scream 7 about?
Details about the storyline are being kept secret, but it has been confirmed that the upcoming movie will revolve around Sidney, as well as her family, picking up from where the 2022 legacy sequel Scream and 2023’s Scream 6 focused on the Carpenter sisters.
Campbell shared with Entertainment Tonight that we will stick with Sidney, drawing a parallel to the recent Halloween sequel trilogy where Jamie Lee Curtis reprised her role as Laurie Strode after 40 years from the 1978 original. He explained that the concept was presented to him, and it’s what enticed him to join the project. He enjoys these films immensely; they’re delightful to be a part of. He’s incredibly thankful for them, never imagining he’d be involved in a movie series lasting this long.
As a dedicated cinephile, I must confess that the enthusiasm for these movies among fans is simply astounding – it’s genuinely heartwarming to see such fervor and dedication. And now, I can hardly contain my own excitement as I prepare to unveil another film for them to enjoy!
What is the Scream 7 release date?
As a die-hard fan of horror movies, I’m thrilled to share that my favorite franchise, Scream, is set to return on February 27, 2026! It’s been three years since we last saw our beloved characters in action, and the last installment raked in an impressive $169 million at the box office in March 2023. Initially, Spyglass aimed to release this new movie in 2025, but creative reworking and setbacks due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes pushed back its production timeline. But hey, good things come to those who wait, right? Can’t wait to see what’s in store for us horror enthusiasts!
On the 7th of January, 2025, Williamson revealed that filming for Scream 7 had commenced. The original plan was for production to start in September 2024, but it was delayed first to December of the previous year and then again until January. Now, as reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, filming is underway in metro Atlanta, Georgia.
Campbell recently told IndieWire that he’s incredibly thrilled about ‘Scream 7’. The production was supposed to start in September but will now begin in December due to some scheduling issues with Kevin and himself. This delay, however, is a positive development as it provides more time to make the film perfect. So I’m really looking forward to it.
Williamson shared on Instagram that it was a truly exceptional day working with an outstanding group of actors and filmmakers. They were top-notch, giving their best effort and supporting him throughout the process. He’s deeply appreciative for this chance, and he felt the influence of Wes Craven every step of the way. The significant impact Craven has had on his life and career is immeasurable.
