Everything You Need to Know About The Death of Superman Before Superman & Lois' Final Season

As a devoted fan of Superman & Lois who has been following this series since its inception, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation as we approach the final season. The teaser for the upcoming two-episode premiere on October 7th has only fueled my anticipation, as it seems that our beloved Man of Steel might not survive this epic battle against the Inverse Superman.

In simple terms, the fourth and last season of “Superman & Lois” on The CW begins on October 7th with a double premiere. This final season is particularly significant because it’s not just the end of the beloved TV show, but also the concluding DC-themed series on The CW. However, what makes this season even more impactful for fans is a hint at Superman’s (Tyler Hoechlin) potential demise, a theme that has been subtly building up since Season 3 and seems to be carrying over into Season 4. The show appears to be following the famous “Death of Superman” comic storyline in its final act, with trailers suggesting that Superman may no longer be alive. Before the return of “Superman & Lois”, here’s a recap of the iconic storyline and how the TV series might diverge from the comics to create its unique ending.

Back in 1992, I found myself immersed in an epic saga known as “The Death of Superman“. This crossover story unfolded across several DC titles like Superman, Action Comics, The Adventures of Superman: The Man of Steel, Justice League America, and Green Lantern. Written by a team including Dan Jurgens, Roger Stern, Louise Simonson, Jerry Ordway, and Karl Kesel, the story spanned three arcs: “Doomsday!”, “Funeral for a Friend”, and “Reign of the Supermen!”.

In the grand narrative, Doomsday emerges from an underground shelter and confronts the Justice League International. Despite their best efforts, he overpowers them effortlessly. Then Superman arrives, initiating a fierce battle between the two. Eventually, Doomsday marches towards Metropolis, a struggle Superman is unable to prevent. The conflict culminates with Doomsday and a severely injured Superman battling in front of the Daily Planet. In his final act, Superman strikes down Doomsday, but both combatants succumb to their wounds. Lois Lane cradles him as he takes his last breaths. This tragic event reverberates throughout the DC Universe, with superheroes and villains alike attending his funeral. At some point, Project Cadmus attempts to seize Superman’s body for cloning purposes, but Lois and Supergirl manage to retrieve it. In Metropolis, the absence of Superman results in a surge of criminal activity which ultimately prompts a team backed by Lex Luthor to intervene.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel the profound sorrow that Jonathan Kent, my boy’s adoptive father, experienced upon his passing. The weight of it all led him to suffer a heart attack. Unbelievably, four characters stepped forward, each claiming to be my son – Steel, Cyborg Superman, Superboy, and Eradicator. It wasn’t long before we realized that the grave where I lay was empty. Though Cyborg Superman presented himself as the genuine article, it turned out that Eradicator had taken my body to the Fortress of Solitude, using the energy from my recovery for his own power source.

How is Superman & Lois Setting Up Death of Superman?

In the upcoming narrative of “Superman & Lois,” the storyline won’t strictly follow its original version, but it has laid some groundwork for its unique interpretation. During Season 3, Superman engaged in a grueling fight with an antagonist resembling the Inverse Superman, who, due to Lex Luthor’s manipulations, had become a beast akin to Doomsday after multiple deaths. The climactic battle between them took place in space, with both characters locked in combat and seemingly poised to deliver lethal strikes as they hurtled towards each other.

The final outcome of this intense battle won’t be disclosed until the debut of Superman & Lois, leaving us in suspense about where the show might go next. Although we can’t say for certain, one thing that is clear is that Lex Luthor (portrayed by Michael Cudlitz) seems convinced that Superman has perished – as suggested in a trailer for the season. Tyler Hoechlin, who plays Superman, hinted that he had less work during the filming of the final season and even joked about possibly dozing off during a rehearsal or scene setup. However, he did confirm that his character appears in flashbacks. Although this doesn’t definitively prove Superman’s demise, it does suggest that we might not see the hero for part of the season, as the story unfolds towards its emotional climax.

The last and concluding season of “Superman & Lois” is set to start airing with a double-episode premiere on Monday, October 7th at 8 p.m. Eastern Time, exclusively on The CW. Subsequent episodes will continue to air every Monday night at the same time.
