As a devoted gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on the thoughts shared by former PlayStation executive, Shawn Layden. He’s not convinced that Sony could successfully pull off an entirely digital PS6 without facing some pushback from gamers like myself.
There’s been speculation that the release of the PS5 Pro without a disc drive could indicate Sony shifting away from physical media. However, it’s important to note that they’ve released all significant titles on Blu-ray and offer a disc drive add-on for those who prefer traditional games. Unfortunately, these add-ons have been hard to come by due to limited availability.
In an interview with Kiwi Talkz, Layden stated that unlike Xbox, Sony might not be able to follow suit and give up on physical media as easily because…
Layden shared with Kiwi Talkz that while Xbox seems to have achieved more by moving away from physical media, he thinks Sony may find it harder to do the same.
He stated, as observed by IGN, “I’m not convinced Sony can pull it off at this point.” He further added, “Xbox appears to have achieved greater success in implementing that strategy, but it’s important to note that Xbox thrives primarily in a select group of nations: the United States, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Interestingly enough, all are English-speaking countries.
In simpler terms, Sony, being the leading platform in approximately 170 countries worldwide, should consider asking questions like, “What portion of our global market might struggle to transition if we move towards a discless model? Are internet connections in remote areas of Italy sufficient for users to enjoy our games effectively?
Layden pointed out that the manufacturer is probably running calculations and acknowledged that there will be a critical threshold, or “tipping point,” for this change. However, he contended that due to the company’s massive global market, it would be challenging for them to completely abandon physical discs because of its sheer size.
As a dedicated gamer, I can confirm that digital sales dominate PlayStation’s business these days, but let’s not forget that physical games account for about 30% of their earnings, which is still quite substantial. It’s important to consider the many fans who have amassed physical game collections over the years. To ensure seamless compatibility with the PS6 and our cherished old libraries, it seems essential that they find a way to play Blu-ray games on the new console.
It appears our prediction is that Sony may provide a disc drive as an additional feature for the PS6, assuming they have sufficient stock to cater to the demand. This seems like a fair trade-off to us.
