Ex-Strictly pro Joanne Clifton: ‘Fiona in Shrek The Musical is my dream role’

As a seasoned theater critic with a soft spot for musicals and a background in dance, I’ve seen my fair share of productions. But none have quite resonated with me like Joanne Clifton‘s transformation into Princess Fiona in Shrek the Musical.

If you imagine ex-Strictly Come Dancing star and world champion ballroom dancer Joanne Clifton, it’s understandable that the image of a green ogre doesn’t come to mind initially.

For Clifon, however, this evening marks her London stage debut as Princess Fiona in Shrek the Musical, and things are unfolding quite differently for her.

“Clifton expressed, this portion particularly resonated with him the most; it had always been his top choice for dream roles.”

When considering a ballroom dancer, one might picture someone akin to Ginger Rogers or Grace Kelly – refined, eloquent, impeccably dressed. Yet, I’m unlike that image; despite my mother’s efforts to instill elegance and class in me.

The professional dancer, who has portrayed Fiona in Shrek the Musical UK tour across the country since July 2023, is now excited to introduce the “feisty” Princess to London’s audience for the first time. This milestone moment was expressed by Clifton as a long-awaited achievement.

At the Eventim Apollo, Anthony Lawrence will be back as Shrek in the production, while Todrick Hall makes his first appearance as the lovable Donkey.

When discussing her eagerness for audiences to attend the performance, Clifton commented that there would be elements appealing to various age groups: “You’ll find humor suitable for children, but there’s also wit and jokes specifically designed for adults that children might not fully comprehend.”

Using this latest update and the announcement of Shrek 5, Clifton highlighted why the series remains popular and meaningful. Essentially, it’s not only amusing and joyful but also carries an essential message: Embrace your true self.

She shared that for her and Fiona, it’s important to be true to oneself rather than trying to conform to others’ expectations. When we inquired about her main insight from the event, she responded with…

Have you ever pondered over when in your entire life you’ll receive another round of applause from a crowd of 3,000 people just for passing gas?

When and where can I see Joanne Clifton in Shrek the Musical?
