The collaboration for the upcoming shooter game, “Gears of War: E-Day,” being developed by Xbox Game Studios and The Coalition, has been reinforced by the involvement of Polish developers at People Can Fly. On Monday, they unveiled some specifics about this development partnership.
As a tech enthusiast, I’m thrilled to jump back into crafting the next chapter of this epic tale. It’s an honor and a heart-pounding chance to expand upon the intense, gut-wrenching action and immersive storytelling that fans have grown to cherish. I can’t thank our partners enough for their faith and backing as we embark on this incredible journey together.
Beyond helping Epic Games in the creation of the initial Gears of War trilogy, People Can Fly took the lead on 2013’s Gears of War: Judgment, a title that centered around secondary character Damon Baird’s story. Following their departure from Epic Games, People Can Fly went on to develop Outriders, a cooperative third-person game published by Square Enix.
Gears of War: E-Day isn’t just our next big game – it’s a homecoming to what truly sets Gears of War games apart as unique and genuine. We’re thrilled to collaborate with the gifted team at People Can Fly, who have been deeply connected to our franchise for such an extended period,” shared Mike Crump, head of The Coalition studio.
At the Xbox Games Showcase 2024, we got our first look at Gears of War: E-Day, the latest installment in the renowned Xbox series. Set as a prequel to Emergence Day, the beginning of the Human-Locust war, this game takes us back to the roots of the conflict. Once again, Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, the primary characters from the first three games, take center stage in Gears of War: E-Day.
Returning to the roots of the franchise
This collaboration aligns perfectly, as Gears of War: E-Day is designed to resonate with the themes and atmosphere reminiscent of the initial trilogy, particularly the first installment. Similarly, People Can Fly played a significant role when the series initially started.
It won’t be long before we uncover additional details about Gears of War: E-Day. We understand that it’s being crafted with Unreal Engine 5 and that The Coalition felt driven to revisit this era in the series, but there are numerous other aspects yet to be disclosed.
Beyond assisting with Gears of War: E-Day, People Can Fly is simultaneously developing a game under its own belt, in partnership with Xbox Game Studios. Dubbed Project Maverick, this secretive project revolves around an intellectual property (IP) owned by Microsoft. The financial backing at the unveiling was estimated to be between $30-$50 million. At present, details are scant, but given the Gears of War connection, I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to be a spin-off title in some capacity.
At the moment, there’s no set release date for Gears of War: E-Day. When it does come out, expect it to be playable on Xbox Series X|S consoles and Windows PC systems. Being an Xbox first-party game, it will also be accessible via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass the very same day of release.
