Restated: Just as Qui-Gon Jinn once said, there’s always a larger part to play. In his debut role, actor Ahmed Best portrayed the iconic CGI character Jar Jar Binks in “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” (1999). Later, he appeared in smaller roles in the subsequent prequels, “Attack of the Clones” (2002) and “Revenge of the Sith” (2005), but now, he is perhaps most recognized for his role in saving Grogu on “The Mandalorian.
In the third season’s episode titled “Chapter 20: The Foundling,” it was revealed that Kelleran Beq, a former Jedi Knight and trainer, saved Grogu when Emperor Palpatine issued Order 66, initiating the Great Jedi Purge. This character, who previously appeared in the web series Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge, made a single appearance on The Mandalorian. Shortly after rescuing Grogu from Coruscant and ensuring his safety, Beq vanished without a trace.
At the Star Wars Celebration 2025, Best expressed, “I’m always eager to slip back into the robe again. I have a mental image of where he went, so I’m hoping we can bring that vision to life someday. It was an absolute blast working on it.
In simpler terms, Best, the skilled martial artist who created Beq’s character for Jedi Temple Challenge, mentioned that his short action scene in The Mandalorian was only a tiny fraction of his abilities. He expressed that having the opportunity to perform a complete version of that action sequence would be his ultimate dream.
Although Best admitted that there has been a resurgence in popularity for Jar Jar Binks (the “Jar Jarenaissance”) since the release of the Star Wars prequels, he expressed to ComicBook his preference for reprising his role as Kelleran Beq. Contrary to his nickname “Sabered Hand,” Best claims that his Jedi character’s real strength lies in teaching.
Best commented, “There’s a wealth of Jedi tales yet to be shared.” He noted that throughout the Star Wars saga, there have been many reluctant Jedi mentors. For instance, when we initially encountered Yoda, he wasn’t keen on teaching Luke Skywalker. Similarly, when we were introduced to Anakin, even wise masters like Yoda, Mace Windu, and Obi-Wan Kenobi were hesitant about taking him under their wing.
Kelleran Beq harbors a strong desire to become a teacher, which he considers his true vocation. He explained, “Being a Jedi is more than just wielding power; it’s about nurturing and guiding others.” Despite being one of the most formidable Jedi in history, Kelleran’s deepest passion lies in molding young Jedi. So, I look forward to exploring the concept that teachers are our modern-day superheroes and delving into what it means to be a Jedi, both in terms of training the new generation of Jedi and understanding the role of a teacher as a Jedi.
