As a seasoned tech enthusiast who has been following the evolution of portable gaming devices for years, I must say that the Lenovo Legion Go S is certainly piquing my interest. Having had the privilege to delve into both the Lenovo Legion Go and the ASUS ROG Ally, I can appreciate the unique selling points each offers.
Earlier this year, we broke the news about the Lenovo Legion Go “Lite”, later identified as the Lenovo Legion Go S. Now, we have fresh updates for you! Key among them is the release of the first official images of the device, which aligns with earlier rumors about a white casing.
Previously reported by Videocardz, the Lenovo Legion Go S is rumored to run on AMD’s new Ryzen Z2 platform, specifically its Z2G “Rembrandt” configuration. This suggests that the Lenovo Legion Go S might be a more budget-friendly choice compared to other models. To achieve this, it appears that Lenovo has scaled back some of the premium features found in the Lenovo Legion Go, such as the detachable sticks, the kickstand, and additional back buttons. Instead, its design seems to resemble the ASUS ROG Ally more closely.

From a glance, it appears quite similar to the ASUS ROG Ally, featuring the same white color scheme. This color choice might suggest a more budget-friendly design. The Z2G “Rembrandt” chip incorporates Zen3+ cores, making it less potent compared to the Zen4 cores found in current devices such as the Lenovo Legion Go and ASUS ROG Ally.
The updated APU model of the Lenovo Legion Go “S” should be priced substantially lower than its current lineup, which retails anywhere from $499 to $599. While the base Lenovo Legion Go typically costs $699 at retail price (however, it’s currently on sale for $200 off on Amazon), this lower-cost version will not include any of its extra features.
From the rendered image, it appears we’re looking at a large, honeycomb-like inverted vent that resembles its predecessor. It’s challenging to gauge size from this rendering alone, but it seems designed to reduce costs by using a smaller display. The estimated retail price could range from $399 to $449, reflecting Lenovo’s desire to introduce an affordable option.
Currently, my preferred choice for portable PC gaming is the Lenovo Legion Go due to its multi-purpose capabilities as a laptop alternative combined with its robust gaming performance. However, considering market trends, it’s reasonable to assume that devices such as the ASUS ROG Ally and especially the Steam Deck have garnered significantly larger market shares thanks to their more budget-friendly options. The ASUS ROG Ally boasts several notable advantages over the Lenovo Legion Go, including a lighter design, more comfortable grips and triggers, and maturing software. Lenovo is making efforts to stay competitive, though, with regular updates to its software and driver suite, as well as hardware upgrades like the Lenovo Legion Go S.
It’s uncertain if the Lenovo Legion Go 2 will preserve some of its precursor’s special attributes. While Lenovo has removed distinctive features from the original Legion Go, such as detachable Joy-Con-like sticks (one functioning as a mouse) and a Surface-like kickstand, it remains to be seen if these features will also be absent in the more powerful Z2 Extreme Lenovo Go 2. I personally hope they won’t be, but considering the increase in power and likely improvements in battery efficiency, additional features might raise concerns about the price.
At CES 2025, taking place in January 2025 as usual in Las Vegas, you can anticipate learning more about this device and other AMD Z2 platform PC gaming handhelds from rival companies to Lenovo.
