Exclusive: Marvel’s New Star Wars Era Post-Jedi Secrets Revealed by Alex Segura

Marvel Comics is preparing for a fresh chapter in Star Wars storytelling this coming spring, as ComicBook had the chance to chat with one of the creators shaping the starship’s course. It has been a decade since the Star Wars franchise made its comeback under Marvel, and so far, the captivating series and events have primarily unfolded during the Original Trilogy. But starting with May’s Star Wars #1, everything is set to transform! The new ongoing series by writer Alex Segura and artist Phil Noto will delve into the untouched era following Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, featuring beloved characters like Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo, and many others.

ComicBook had a chat with Alex Segura, the renowned writer from the Star Wars universe, to discuss his upcoming projects within this expansive universe in a distant galaxy. The acclaimed author shared some tantalizing insights about his plans for characters such as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia Organa. He also hinted at the challenges the New Republic might encounter following the fall of the Empire, the arrival of fresh personalities, his partnership with artist Phil Noto, and additional details. Moreover, we are thrilled to unveil a sneak peek at the interior pages of Star Wars #1.

Interviewer: It must be thrilling to create new Star Wars stories in a relatively untouched area of the franchise. How have you gone about developing the backstories for renowned figures such as Luke, Han, and Leia?

Respondent: Crafting the histories for iconic characters like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia has been an intriguing challenge. My strategy has been to delve deep into their existing personalities, motivations, and relationships, while also exploring unexplored aspects of their lives that will resonate with fans.

Alex Segura: It’s been truly exhilarating, offering a refreshing change from the Battle of Jakku, which I greatly enjoyed but was also intertwined with a great deal of established lore. Now we find ourselves in a more open era, and it’s an immense privilege and excitement to delve into what Luke, Leia, Han, and other characters were doing during this period.

From my perspective, I strive to create an atmosphere where each tale seems unique and unexpected, reflecting the dynamic nature of our universe. The perils today are not like the monolithic threat posed by the Empire, but they remain just as formidable. Our aim is to keep the protagonists alert, ensuring that the challenges they encounter always feel new and intriguing.

Now that the Empire has been vanquished, what obstacles and difficulties is the New Republic encountering in their endeavor to chart a novel course? Specifically, how are things progressing as Luke Skywalker works on reestablishing the Jedi Order?

As a movie reviewer, I can’t help but express my excitement for the upcoming Star Wars installment! In this new chapter, we find ourselves rejoining our beloved trio – Luke, Leia, and Han – each grappling with their unique duties and aspirations. While Luke is determined to restore the Jedi Order, his path isn’t without its obstacles; what will ultimately drive him forward? As for Leia, she faces the challenge of governing during tumultuous times, all while Han seeks to find his place within this ever-changing universe.

The story takes a thrilling turn as a mysterious new player emerges on the galactic stage. Contrary to expectations, the New Republic doesn’t get a moment to catch its breath after defeating the Empire; instead, a fresh and unforeseen threat arises, putting everything they stand for to the test.

Meanwhile, we delve into the lingering underworld strife left in the wake of Return of the Jedi, with a sprinkle of delightful cameos and a handful of unexpected twists. This installment promises an exhilarating journey that will undoubtedly captivate both longtime fans and newcomers alike!

Who are the fresh characters that Star Wars enthusiasts should anticipate encountering in the upcoming storylines, given that Darth Vader and the Emperor have vanished and a significant time gap exists before the emergence of Kylo Ren, what new villains are causing chaos in the galaxy?

The main idea that seems to run through these initial issues is that things don’t get easier just because the Empire has collapsed and Vader and the Emperor are no more. The heroes now face new challenges, such as governing, redefining their identities, and deciding between roles like diplomacy and smuggling. Moreover, they grapple with self-discovery while some members of the New Republic question the benefits of joining it. This internal conflict sets the stage for problems from the very beginning. However, as the heroes delve deeper into the reasons behind these issues, they gradually uncover something much more sinister. Each issue will stand alone and almost feel like a separate genre – there’s a western-style story, a murder mystery, a heist – but when read together, they will reveal a larger, overarching mystery that should be resolved by the end of the first arc.

During our collaboration, Phil Noto has brought a wealth of impressive talent from his previous work on Marvel’s Star Wars comics. Specifically, he has contributed a great deal to our project with his exceptional skills.

As a long-time admirer of Phil’s extraordinary talent, I can confidently say that having him aboard for this book is nothing short of a blessing. His professionalism and skill set are unparalleled, and his presence instantly elevates the series to new heights. It’s not just about his striking likenesses; it’s the rhythm and organization of the storytelling as well. He breathes life into my words in a way that makes them feel like they’ve been endorsed by the galaxy far, far away itself. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to collaborate with such a masterful artist on this project.

Is Star Wars the main series, but could there potentially be characters or plotlines suitable for collaborative stories or even standalone novels in the future?

The comic book team maintains a consistent level of communication, however, coordinating crossovers is mostly a decision made by the editors. Still, I’m confident we’d work harmoniously!
