Last week, I was fortunate enough to attend a sneak peek event for Mecha BREAK, during which I had the chance to explore their three game modes and the impressive lineup of 13 playable mechs, or as they’re called, Strikers.
At this very event, I had the delightful opportunity to engage in a conversation with Kris Kwok, CEO of Amazing Seasun Games and Executive Producer of Mecha BREAK. Our discussion revolved around the Xbox exclusivity of their game and whether it could potentially be played on portable gaming devices like the Steam Deck and ASUS ROG Ally. In our chat, I discovered that the developers faced certain hurdles when optimizing for the Xbox Series S and its controller.
Timed Xbox exclusivity and the challenges of bringing Mecha BREAK to Series S
When I inquired about why Kwok’s team chose timed exclusivity with Xbox instead of PlayStation, he explained, “They’re more forward-thinking than Sony.” Following a chuckle, he elaborated that he thought it was a mutually advantageous deal with Microsoft since mecha games are already popular in Japan. Therefore, releasing a mecha game exclusively to the Western market through Xbox seemed less risky due to market saturation.
Additionally, I inquired about whether Mecha BREAK would be available on Xbox Game Pass, and Kwok responded positively. Therefore, this is exciting news for subscribers to anticipate.
If a game runs smoothly on the Xbox Series S due to its comparable specifications, it’s highly likely that the same game would run well on the Steam Deck as well.
At some point, I inquired about potential difficulties in tailoring Mecha BREAK for the Xbox Series S. Instantly, Kwok lit up with enthusiasm and shared that the console’s restricted RAM posed a challenging factor during the optimization process.
As a tech enthusiast, I found myself awestruck when our team lead singled out Mashmak mode’s expansive 256km battlefield (16km by 16km) and declared it as the nearly insurmountable “technological challenge” we had been grappling with for some time.
Mecha BREAK and gaming handhelds like Steam Deck
Although Mecha BREAK hasn’t been officially verified for the Steam Deck yet, we have tested its internal version on this handheld device.
When I inquired about whether any thought had been given to tailoring Mecha BREAK for gaming handhelds such as the Steam Deck and ROG Ally, Kwok responded by grinning and stating, “Of course, if it runs on Series S, then it’s highly likely that it will run smoothly on the Steam Deck in terms of hardware specifications.” He further mentioned that an internal version of Mecha BREAK had been tested on the Steam Deck.
Delightfully, fans of portable PC gaming, you’ll likely have the opportunity to enjoy this free-to-play multiplayer title directly on your device upon its release, scheduled for both Xbox and PC platforms around springtime in 2025.

Furthermore, Kwok elaborated on another hurdle they faced during Xbox and handheld development: assigning keyboard keys to a controller. The team found that players across various regions had unique control preferences, which required extensive effort to ensure proper configuration, explaining the lengthy process.
During my review, I switched between playing with a keyboard and an Xbox controller to get a feel for both experiences. Using the controller, my character moved quite smoothly, but if the current control setup remains for the game’s release, I suggest swapping the booster and thruster functions from A and B to the trigger buttons instead.
I personally found it less convenient to rotate the camera and boost with the default controls.

Expressing that Mecha BREAK is expected to be massive might not fully capture its potential impact. The recent open beta, held last Sunday, attracted a staggering 317,522 simultaneous players, making it the fourth most played game on Steam that day. Moreover, it’s currently the eighth most anticipated title on Steam, indicating a significant number of people eagerly waiting for its release.
If you love mechs and are searching for an engaging, free multiplayer game, you should definitely look into Mecha BREAK upon its release this coming spring, available on both Xbox Series X|S and PC.
