In essence, Hazelight Studios is renowned for crafting games that necessitate teamwork to conquer intricate puzzles. The latest addition to this lineup, titled Split Fiction, preserves this theme and introduces a particularly challenging secret mission designed for two players. The laser-themed challenge has proven to be incredibly difficult, as only a handful of players have successfully completed it so far. Among the first successful duos were live streamers “sharkOvO” and “E1uM4y.” Upon accomplishing this task, they received a video message from director Josef Fares commending their achievements. Furthermore, Fares hinted that he would extend invitations to these streamers for an exclusive sneak peek at Hazelight’s upcoming project at the studio headquarters.
In a tweet from his account X, Fares announced that two streamers were the first to complete a specific task. He expressed his intention to fulfill his promise by inviting them both to Sweden for a sneak peek at their upcoming game. Fares did not specify when this preview would occur, but considering “Split Fiction” was released only two weeks prior, it’s unclear how far along the development process is. Regardless, this news has generated excitement among fans who are eager to see Hazelight’s new project and express a blend of admiration for Fares and some envy toward those getting an early glimpse of the game.
Currently, there’s no clear information about what project Hazelight is working on post-“Split Fiction”, but it’s a pretty good guess that the game will maintain the collaborative play style that the studio is recognized for. Founded by Josef Fares in 2014, this Stockholm-based studio was established following his work on “Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons”. Over the past 11 years, Hazelight has produced and released a total of three games: “A Way Out”, “It Takes Two”, and “Split Fiction”, all published by Electronic Arts. While “A Way Out” received positive reviews, it was “It Takes Two”, released in 2021, that truly propelled the developer into the spotlight. Following its release, “It Takes Two” was nominated for numerous awards and ultimately won the accolade of Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2021.
In just a short span since its release, “Split Fiction” appears to be mirroring the triumph of “It Takes Two.” The game has already achieved multi-million sales, and has garnered widespread acclaim from critics. As we’re still in the early months of 2025, it wouldn’t be surprising if this game is nominated for several Game of the Year awards by November and December.
Due to their significant accomplishments and popularity, it’s quite an honor to find out what Avalanche Studios (Hazelight) are planning next in their pipeline. While Fares has hidden video references in his past games, the journey to Sweden for Split Fiction is undeniably the most exciting Easter egg yet.
