Kodansha recently unveiled a revamped design for the upcoming release of “Musashi,” the timeless Japanese novel by Eiji Yoshikawa from 1935. This updated version will captivate fans of “Vagabond” as it features a brand-new illustration by Takehiko Inoue, who is renowned for creating both “Vagabond” and “Slam Dunk.” “Musashi,” an epic Japanese tale inspired by the life of the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, is one of Japan’s most beloved and financially successful books, giving rise to numerous adaptations. As “Vagabond” is a manga adaptation of this iconic work, it was Takehiko Inoue, the mangaka, who was selected to create artwork for the new edition of “Musashi.
Following the massive success of his basketball manga, “Slam Dunk,” Inoue launched his next major work, titled “Vagabond.” This series was first published by Kodansha in 1998, with a total of 327 chapters released so far, compiled into 37 volumes. However, since 2010, the manga has experienced several breaks, and it entered an indefinite hiatus in 2015, with no clear indication as to whether or when it will resume. The author’s health issues are believed to be the primary cause of these pauses. Despite this, Inoue seems fit enough to direct the upcoming “The First Slam Dunk” film (scheduled for 2022) and design a new cover for the re-release of “Mushashi.” At present, it remains uncertain if Inoue will ever pick up “Vagabond” again and conclude the story.
Experience Eiji Yoshikawa’s reimagined classic samurai tale, based on the true adventures of Japan’s most revered swordsman! This latest edition boasts a captivating cover illustration by none other than Takehiko Inoue, renowned for his work on Slam Dunk and Vagabond.

Who is Miyamoto Musashi, the Man Who Inspired Musashi and Vagabond
In the late 1500s and early 1600s, Japan was home to Miyamoto Mushashi, a renowned swordsman who is said to have been unbeaten in sword fights. This earned him the title of one of the greatest swordsmen ever. Since much of his early life remains shrouded in mystery, Yoshikawa chose to write a novel about Mushashi’s life called “Mushashi“. The summary of this novel follows the legendary swordsman after he took part in the significant Battle of Sekigahara in 1600.
Originally, the swordsman aimed to join the Battle of Sekigahara to achieve samurai status, but an impulsive action turned him into a fugitive. Following a term in solitary confinement, Miyamoto Musashi forsakes his dream of becoming a samurai and instead focuses on refining a unique sword style. His subsequent journeys frequently cast him as an unwilling hero, testing his technique to its limits. The Vagabond manga portrays Musashi as a nomadic wanderer without a permanent home.
