The Handmaid’s Tale is Gearing Up for an Epic Finale

The Series is Finally Approaching the Finish Line

In Season 6, Episode 5 titled “Janine,” June and Moira adopt the personas of Marthas to infiltrate Jezebel’s, a move that sparks tension between them due to their past connections with the establishment. Notably, Moira had previously been employed at Jezebel’s before her flight to Canada, where she was known as “Ruby.” During her time there, she was compelled to offer herself sexually to any Commander or high-ranking guest who desired her without the option to refuse. This prolonged period saw Moira subjected to relentless abuse by numerous men.

Much like myself, June was escorted by Commander Fred Waterford, my initial superior. Fred developed an emotional bond with June, a connection strictly prohibited between commanders and their subordinates. In a secretive move, Fred adorned June in elegant attire and cosmetics to spirit her away to Jezebel’s, intending to engage in a forbidden act. This clandestine rendezvous proved to be one of Fred’s most regrettable decisions. Not only did June reconnect with her dearest friend, Moira, but she was also drawn into a covert operation aimed at smuggling letters penned by handmaids out of the nation, potentially igniting change.

Going back to Jezebel’s is challenging for them, as their past traumas and the presence of their friend Janine, who was once a handmaid and now works there, stir up difficult feelings. However, their objective is crucial: Mayday intends to bomb Jezebel’s in order to eliminate several powerful and radical commanders simultaneously. To minimize casualties, it’s essential to keep the girls associated with Jezebel’s safe. Janine offers to prepare the girls for the impending attack, driven by her desire to shield them from a grim destiny.

June harbors a sense of remorse due to the separation from Janine in Chicago, leading to Janine’s eventual return to Gilead and the Red Center. Desiring to safeguard Janine, June proposes that she join them, but Janine declines as she won’t abandon Jezebel’s without her companions. This sudden suggestion ignites a disagreement between June and Moira. Moira expresses frustration towards June for acting rashly and jeopardizing their entire strategy. In response, June justifies her actions, explaining her guilt over Janine, which escalates into an argument where Moira reveals feelings of anger towards June, as she believes everything always revolves around June’s concerns.

Hey Moira, I’m no stranger to the fact that I might not grasp the depth of your experiences. Believe me, I’m fully aware of it.

You and I have both experienced terrible acts – rape, physical abuse, and torture. It’s tragic that such horrific events have been inflicted upon us both. These things should never have occurred in the first place.

June: And I just think if we start comparing our suffering… then those f**kers have won. Right?

Moira: Yeah.

In the end, I come to understand that debating who suffered more is precisely how Gilead triumphs. We share our deep affection for each other, a sentiment that proves crucial when a Guardian attempts to harm us. The Guardian exploits Moira’s vulnerability, but we band together and, tragically, take his life in self-defense. We hastily dispose of the body and attempt to escape, only to find Jezebel’s on high alert, making our flight a daunting task. The episode concludes with June and I confronting Commander Lawrence as he departs, pleading with him to help us escape, and surprisingly, he consents, agreeing to secretly transport us in the trunk of his car.

What to Expect from Season 6, Episode 6 – “Surprise”

The Stakes Have Never Been Higher

At the conclusion of Season 6, Episode 5 titled “Janine”, there was no sneak peek for the upcoming episode next week, keeping viewers guessing even more. The narrative is expected to continue with the repercussions of “Janine” and delve into Commander Lawrence’s plans regarding June and Moira. Additionally, it may explore what transpired with Luke and his Mayday associate following their encounter with Jezebel’s Guardians. Google’s brief summary for “Surprise” remains intriguing.

As a movie reviewer, I’d put it this way: It’s evident that Commander Lawrence is inclined to escort June and Moira towards New Bethlehem, his latest endeavor, aiming to mend the fractured nation of Gilead. New Bethlehem presents an idyllic vision where families can reunite, offering women the opportunity to learn, work, and contribute beyond their homes.

This new project, I believe, is Lawrence’s attempt at redemption – a chance to rectify the catastrophic creation of Gilead, a country he played a significant role in shaping. He admits his culpability in its downfall and seeks to restore it. His remorse for past actions and the lingering memory of his departed wife fuel his determination to be a force for good, striving to transform Gilead into a place worthy of its inhabitants.

Presently, Lawrence resides in New Bethlehem together with his newlywed spouse, Naomi Putnam – widow of Commander Putnam. Notably, Naomi is also the mother of Charlotte (also recognized as Angela), who happens to be Janine’s daughter. Intriguingly, viewers have come to understand that June once again dons a Handmaid’s uniform, this time seemingly orchestrating some form of uprising from within. The events unfolding in Season 6, Episode 6 – “Surprise” may mark the commencement of this revolution. With June now more deeply embedded in Gilead than ever before, should she choose to act, the timing appears crucial.
