At the Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo, there’s no requirement for guests to consume their own urine. This seems self-explanatory in a hotel charging £5,000 per night, but it might still offer peace of mind to those who have been following Celebrity Bear Hunt on Netflix.
In this television series, former SAS member Bear Grylls establishes a camp within the lush jungles of Costa Rica to instruct various celebrities on survival techniques such as utilizing urine for life-saving purposes. Later, he attempts to track these celebrities in their natural habitats. In this show, British television personality Holly Willoughby serves as Bear’s co-host from a safe distance and in more casual attire than her usual Dancing on Ice outfits.

Despite the potential dangers with Grylls’s traps during his expeditions, Costa Rica’s rainforest still appears breathtaking on camera, and it offers an inviting atmosphere for those who enjoy piña coladas more than the drinks typically found at Bear’s bar.
One of several lodging choices in Guanacaste, the coastal region where the series was filmed, is The Four Seasons, a place Man vs. Wild’s Grylls took refuge during his breaks from filming (fourseasons.com/costarica)).
During my recent trip, I opted for a cost-effective solution by staying 15 miles along the coast at the Riu Palace Costa Rica. Here, you can enjoy a seven-night all-inclusive stay that includes flights and transfers, all for £1,839 (available on tui.co.uk).

In just a few days, I found myself utterly captivated by the comfort of my lounger, unable to tear myself away. The beaches along Costa Rica’s Pacific coast are a sight to behold – soft-grained coves with curves reminiscent of the Milky Way’s interior. Should luck and patience align, one might witness the spectacle of sea turtles awkwardly navigating the shoreline under the cover of night, there to lay their precious eggs.
You also have the option to observe surfers riding the waves, or even better, take part yourself! Many relaxed surf lessons and board rentals are available in charming coastal towns like Tamarindo, at a cost similar to a few rounds of beer.
Approximately one third of the nation lies within national parks or wildlife reserves, making a jungle experience easily accessible even beyond the beaches. Located just off the Riu Palace’s road, I discovered Diamante Eco Adventure Park (diamanteecoadventurepark.com) – an adventure park that might not challenge Bear Grylls or his sturdy companions like Boris Becker and Mel B, but it offers mile-long zip lines and challenging tracks which could suit the needs of some less adventurous individuals like Shirley Ballas and Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.

In my stay there, I thoroughly enjoyed horseback riding and kayaking, but I yearned for a more thrilling experience. With the assistance of TUI reps from the hotel, I scheduled an adventure in Tenorio Volcano National Park (visitcostarica.com). This included a visit to the stunningly blue pool beneath the Rio Celeste waterfall, a hike through the lofty branches of the cloud forest at Monteverde, and whitewater rafting on the River Tenorio. From my raft, I was frequently ejected by the rapids, with howler monkeys mockingly chuckling from their vantage points in the ceiba trees as it happened for the fourth or fifth time.
Instead of the anticipated thrill from Monteverde’s renowned ‘sky bridges’ (skyadventures.travel), it was a simple nature walk that stole the show, contrary to its seemingly ordinary description.
In a seemingly mystical manner, our tour guide, José, seemed to conjure up animal sightings effortlessly, pointing out various exotic creatures such as the tink frog, cat-eyed snake, and blue morpho butterfly. The latter, with its stunningly azure iridescence, was even more mesmerizing than the Rio Celeste waterfall pool – captivating as it flitted through the woods, but truly magical later in the park’s butterfly house when one alighted on my finger, making me feel like a fairy tale princess.
At that location, you might observe butterflies breaking free from their cocoons and spreading their wings hesitantly, almost as if expressing surprise (‘Wow, what on earth is this?’) prior to embarking on their initial, shaky, and unsure flight.

The star of the show, though not particularly useful, is undeniably charming – the silly sloth. Occasionally, it gets confused and grasps its own limb for a branch, leading to an amusing fall from the tree. These creatures aren’t hard to spot in Costa Rica; they’re famously lazy sleepers, resting for about 18 hours daily. When awake, they move slower than molasses. However, seeing one high up in the forest canopy only gives you half the enjoyment because… well, it’s more fun to observe them up close!
According to José, what may appear as laziness could instead be a drug issue, specifically a problem with marijuana, since the leaves of their favorite tree contain high levels of THC (the psychoactive component in cannabis). This explains the constant blissful expressions on their small pink faces – an observation I later find myself making too. Remarkably, no drugs were needed for this effect as Costa Rica naturally offers a similar euphoria.
