Exploring the funnier side of Microsoft as it celebrates its 50th anniversary with some of the best memes

Microsoft celebrates its 50th birthday, but creating a meme for each year would be too challenging, even for an assistant like me; after all, internet memes weren’t around 50 years ago, right? So instead, I’ve collected some of my favorite memes along with picks from the Windows Central team. Choosing just a few wasn’t easy given the abundance of fantastic ones (and let’s hope that in 2025, more memes will embrace the 16:9 ratio).

Microsoft memes are universally relatable because most of us spend significant parts of our lives looking at Windows screens, not just during updates…

Laughing at these tools of our corporate rulers is a shared coping mechanism, and something that people from all backgrounds can understand. But let’s get straight to the memes!

Learning to count, the Microsoft way…

From the perspective of an onlooker:
Microsoft’s naming approach for its operating systems has consistently been innovative. Starting with the year-named releases like Windows 95, 98, and 2000, they then moved to more modern-sounding names such as XP and Windows Vista.

However, it was clear that Windows Vista didn’t resonate well with users, leading to a meticulously designed reboot, Windows 7, aimed at regaining our confidence. Skipping straight to 10, they seemingly chose to bypass the number 9, possibly to prevent confusion with older software associating it with Windows 95 or 98.

So, what could be the name of Windows 12? Well, considering their pattern, it might just be… Windows 12. At times, they like to keep us on our toes, and at other times, they make things predictable.

Security so good even you won’t get into your settings

Windows Defender, the security system so good, the only thing it defends your PC from is you.

When Microsoft Edge got… Edgy

It may seem amusing to think that Microsoft truly posted this tweet, but it’s a hoax. Instead, the prankster behind it is the browser competitor, OperaGX.

You want to shutdown? That’s the fun part, you can’t.

Among the few constants in life, three stand out: death, taxes, and unexpected Windows updates – especially when all you long for is to close your laptop and drift off to sleep.

Apple rehashing Microsoft tech and being applauded for it

In 2012, Microsoft was ridiculed for introducing a keyboard for their Surface tablet, which eventually led to the comic by Joel Watson depicting how Apple would reshape this concept for a more welcoming audience. Lo and behold, Apple indeed followed suit, presenting the idea just three years later.

The true test of a millenial…

Instead of blaming YouTube Shorts and TikTok for supposedly damaging our children’s minds, perhaps it’s worth considering if we ourselves weren’t just as engrossed in watching Windows Media Player videos after school.

Developers, Developers, Developers

To fully grasp its charm, you should definitely watch the video. It has been remixed multiple times, one popular version being ‘Steve Ballmer’s Monkey Dance,’ based on his rant from the 25th anniversary. Maybe we’ll be lucky enough to see him perform it again for the 50th anniversary?

Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)

The iconic “Blue Screen of Death” (BSOD) has been a well-known joke for years, but gained significant attention following the notorious CrowdStrike downtime last year.

As screens worldwide encountered the BSOD, it provided an excellent opportunity for memes and we curated the top CrowdStrike memes into a distinct collection.

Everyone loves to hate Microsoft Teams

Since the onset of the 2020 Covid pandemic, numerous individuals have transitioned to remote or hybrid work environments. This shift, however, has led Microsoft Teams to become a more frequent cause of exasperation… and amusement in the form of memes.

Please, can we just have MSN Messenger back?

All qualifications are useless, just learn Excel

The first rule of using Excel is to keep it a secret, my partner who calls himself the ‘spreadsheet wizard’ says so. However, when it comes to Google Sheets, feel free to share your skills openly, as people generally don’t pay much attention.

Sexy Bill Gates

Among the plethora of ‘Dreamy Bill Gates’ memes, I found one that particularly resonated with me and I believe will linger in your memories (or nightmares) for quite some time. Now, let’s delve into a bit more storage-themed humor…

As you ponder this intriguing meme, remember the old adage: “Good things come to those who wait” – just like data on a hard drive! And if you find yourself scratching your head in confusion, don’t worry; it’s all part of the RAM-ification process.

More from Microsoft’s 50th Anniversary

There are countless humorous instances throughout Microsoft’s history, such as the fond memories of MSN Messenger, the demise of Skype, and the infamous Xbox “Red Ring of Death,” not to mention the ever-evolving Start Menu that keeps us guessing. Windows95man, a DJ who also happens to be a symbol of memes himself, is just one example!

As we approach Microsoft’s 50th anniversary, we invite you to share your favorite Microsoft moments from the past five decades. From ranking the top 7 Microsoft games to debating whether Windows Mixed Reality was truly that terrible, we can’t wait to hear your stories!
