As a dedicated Star Trek: Deep Space Nine aficionado, I must admit that when Nicole de Boer took over as the host for the Dax symbiont from Terry Farrell, she addressed an issue that had long lingered in the series. Farrell’s Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax was undeniably one of DS9’s most cherished characters. Jadzia was not only Quark’s (Armin Shimerman) confidante, but also Captain Benjamin Sisko’s (Avery Brooks) dearest friend and engaged in a romance with Lt. Commander Worf (Michael Dorn). The abrupt, senseless, and violent demise of Jadzia Dax at the close of DS9 season 6 sparked debate when she was replaced by Nicole de Boer’s Ezri Dax.

On “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” Lieutenant Ezri Dax proved to be successful in her role. Unlike Jadzia Dax, who served as the station’s Science Officer, Ezri took on the role of a counselor. As a therapist, Ezri was more attuned to her own emotions and those of others compared to Jadzia. In essence, while Jadzia embodied the concept of living with and upholding the legacy of a Trill symbiont, Ezri provided insights into the personal impacts and transformations that come from inheriting memories from nine different lifetimes.

Ezri Was A Person Before She Was A Joined Trill

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 7 unveiled more about Ezri than just a bearer of the Dax symbiote. Throughout her five-season tenure on the series, it was never disclosed what Jadzia Dax’s surname was before merging with Dax. However, Ezri’s character identity as Ezri Tigan is ingrained from the start. Ezri has a mother and sibling who appear in episodes, making it evident that she had a life prior to linking with the Dax symbiont.

One explanation for this situation is that Ezri Tigan became joined with Dax solely due to an urgent medical issue that arose during the transportation of the Dax symbiont back to Trill. Since Ezri was the only Trill present at the time, she had to host Dax in order to preserve the symbiont’s life. In her own words:

Lying on that operating table, I thought I’d wake up the same as before. Boy, was I wrong! Instead, I found myself transformed into eight distinct individuals. This turn of events took me completely by surprise.

Ezri’s history shows us that being a joined Trill can be quite unsettling. The fact that everything Ezri was before was replaced by Dax is indeed a chilling thought. What we learn from Ezri Dax is that there are many aspects to consider when it comes to the psychology of joining as a Trill, and it’s surprising that DS9 didn’t explore Jadzia’s past in the same depth.

DS9 Was More Interested In Previous Dax Hosts Than Who Jadzia Was

It Never Mattered Who Jadzia Was Without Dax

In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the focus was more on delving into the past lives of the Dax symbiont rather than developing Jadzia Dax as an individual character. Initially, many of Jadzia’s key interests, such as her connections with the Ferengi, Klingons, and even Captain Sisko, seemed to stem from Curzon Dax (Frank Owen Smith). In fact, during Deep Space Nine’s season 2 episode “Invasive Procedures,” when the Dax symbiont was abducted, Jadzia was left alone for the first time in DS9, and she appeared noticeably different from her usual self.

As a movie reviewer looking back on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, I found that the early portrayal of Jadzia Dax delved deeply into the history of the symbiont rather than fully fleshing out Jadzia herself. However, as the series progressed through its seasons, Jadzia’s character became increasingly complex and well-rounded. By the time Lieutenant Commanders Jadzia Dax and Worf shared their romantic journey, there was no question that Jadzia Dax stood as a fully realized individual. Despite the mystery surrounding Jadzia’s past, it was clear that Star Trek: Deep Space Nine placed greater emphasis on her current life experiences.
