Even though several anime series are on hiatus, the holidays continue to be an exhilarating period for anime enthusiasts as most series unveil thrilling new holiday-themed artwork. Among these, Fairy Tail has outdone them all with a stunning New Year’s promotion. Since 2025 is the Year of the Snake according to the Chinese Zodiac, creator Hiro Mashima is marking the occasion in style by releasing an apt new illustration showcasing the series’ most adorable snake duo.
Hiro Mashima’s official account on X shared a post celebrating the New Year with fans and followers, along with a new drawing of Cobra and Kinana. The adorable pair is depicted in chibi style, with Erik sporting a playful, sneaky smile while Kinana is shown in her snake form from when she was called Cubellios. Every year, manga artists like Mashima create New Year’s illustrations, such as the recent stunning teaser for Frieren, or Hirohiko Araki continuing his tradition since 1991. So, this is a delightful event for fans of Mashima’s work.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hiro Mashima Draws Cobra and Cubellios For the Year of the Snake
Although Erik and Kinana might seem relatively minor figures in the extensive cast and narrative of Fairy Tail, they are among the few canonical couples within the series, and their supporters will undoubtedly be thrilled to see them taking center stage this New Year. In truth, considering that Erik possesses Poison Dragon Slayer abilities and Kinana is a human transformed from a snake, Hiro Mashima may have picked no better characters for this year’s New Year illustration.
As someone who has been a dedicated fan of Fairy Tail since its debut, I find it delightful to see the unconventional pairing of Erik and Kinana gaining more attention in the series. While the traditional couples like Natsu and Lucy are certainly beloved, it’s refreshing to see Mashima expand his focus to other relationships within the world of Fairy Tail. Having followed the manga since its early days, I can attest to the gradual development of Erik and Kinana’s bond, which has been charmingly portrayed even in small snippets throughout the anime.
The confirmation of their relationship and subsequent engagement in the manga, as well as their increased presence in Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest, fills me with joy as a fan. It’s heartening to see that Mashima is giving these characters the spotlight they deserve. I eagerly anticipate more artwork featuring Erik and Kinana as a couple, and hope that their story continues to unfold in future installments of Fairy Tail.
