Fairy Tail Star Not Returning to Series Following Accusations Against Crunchyroll

As a long-time fan of Fairy Tail and Gajeel, this recent turn of events has left me utterly disheartened. David Wald, the voice behind my beloved character, has been through quite the ordeal with Crunchyroll, and it’s heartbreaking to see such a talented actor feeling unheard and mistreated.

David Wald, known for his voice acting role as Gajeel in “Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest”, has announced he won’t be participating in the English dub release anymore or returning to Crunchyroll’s studio due to allegations against the company this Fall. Earlier this Fall, Wald made serious accusations against Crunchyroll, claiming that fan mail sent to the company had been opened and shared among employees rather than being delivered. In his statement, he expressed regret for those who had sent him items through Funimation or Crunchyroll over the past 5 years, as “unfortunately, I didn’t receive them, as I learned yesterday that Crunchyroll opened my private mail, discarded your letters, and passed out any included items to their staff.

Crunchyroll has stated they’re looking into the issue, and as a result, actor Todd Haberkorn shared on social media that he won’t be coming back to Crunchyroll’s studio or voicing Gajeel in Fairy Tail for now. In his own words, “I will no longer voice #Gajeel in #FairyTail. I will not return to the @Crunchyroll studio. The list of their abuses is too long to mention here, but soon I’ll share them all on my Twitch channel [linking to his Twitch channel]. Keep updated.

Crunchyroll Accused of Mail Tampering

Hey there, gaming community! On October 25th, I, Wald, first brought up some allegations against Crunchyroll on X platform. Here’s what went down: “Hey pals, if you ever sent me anything via Funimation or Crunchyroll in the last five years, my apologies – it seems like I didn’t receive it. Yesterday, I discovered that Crunchyroll had been rummaging through my private mail, tossing out your letters, and dishing out any included items to their staff.” To back up my claim, I shared some images of the package contents, which I accused them of meddling with: “Hey, Crunchyroll colleagues, check out this photo – it’s a snapshot of one of the packages addressed to me that they opened and passed around among employees. If any of you happen to have some of it, I would be incredibly grateful if you could return it to me.

Wald, known for his voice work in shows like “Fairy Tail”‘s Gajeel and “My Hero Academia”‘s Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu, has had roles with Funimation and now Crunchyroll. The recent allegations against him were severe enough to prompt a response from Crunchyroll that may not have been what Wald expected, leading him to distance himself from the company and its projects. In response to the initial claims, Crunchyroll released an official statement regarding the matter.

Crunchyroll Responds to Accusations

Fans of anime often feel a strong bond towards the voice actors behind their favorite characters, and the emotional depth conveyed by these actors significantly enhances the enjoyment of anime content. However, we are looking into claims that some fan mail has not been delivered to one particular voice actor. We value the privacy of all our voice talent and never intentionally open or handle mail or packages that aren’t addressed to Crunchyroll. Instead, any fan mail should be sent directly to the talent and their management.” (Crunchyroll’s official statement as shared with Anime News Network)

After their declaration, Wald decided to express his response on X as follows: “I’m still waiting for a reply from them, no apology, no promise to return the items… nothing at all. So it seems there might be a ‘case’, or maybe I’m just the Whistle that Never Stops Blowing. Either way, these abuses will come to light. Stay Tuned.” Additionally, he mentioned that due to the sensitive nature of this legal matter, he would soon disclose where fans can send him gifts in the future. At the time of this writing, it remains unclear what impact this will have on Wald’s roles in Crunchyroll’s English dub productions.
